Hi!

I’ve just purchased a loaf muffin top mattress.

Having now slept on it for a few days it’s more firm and less ‘squidgy’ than I was hoping for. I was expecting a much more cloud like feeling. I’m a back/side sleeper.

Could you recommend something more suitable?

Thanks,
JA

Hi Ja,

Thanks for getting in touch about the Loaf Muffin Top mattress. Sorry to hear its proving too firm for you.

What we would say firstly is any new mattress will take up to 4 weeks to fully get used to as it settles and you get used to it. However, the Load Muffin Top 'Pillowtop' mattress is a firm feel so its unlikely to change significantly if its really feeling too hard for you.

We usually like Loaf's mattress construction method for their 'Top Dog' and 'Perfect' mattress models. However, we have to disagree with the construction method of this 'Muffin Top' mattress. This is because its a dreaded pillowtop style. Meaning you can't turn or rotate the mattress. Pillowtops are notorious for settlement, look at our review of the Premier Inn Pillowtop Hypnos model. As you can't remove this topper it means when it settles there's no way to turn it over or replace it. Often drastically reducing the mattresses lifespan in the process.

We're not sure why Loaf have introduced this model unless it is for a trial? Maybe its to offer a reasonably priced synthetic latex pocket sprung mattress like our Origins Pocket 1500 Latex, however, we would never use a pillowtop in our ranges.

I've got distracted haven't I?! Rant over about pillowtops! Let's look at why it maybe too firm.

Loaf have tried to avoid using memory foam in this mattress by using latex instead. Sadly they don't give the blend or depth of latex, but looking at the price its likely to be synthetic latex and firm given the tension. Latex has a far longer shelflife than memory foam and isn't likely to soften too much over time. Given the issues with pillowtops its more than  likely that this mattress is using a 1.6 frim gauge synthetic pocket spring. Giving it firm support to try and avoid the potential sagging issue with the pillowtop. This married with the latex it's proving too firm. Especially if you sometimes sleep on your side and therefore need more forgiving mattress upholstery layers.

Alternatives to the Loaf Muffin Top Mattress:

If you're looking for a softer alternative to the firm Loaf mattress then we have two recommendations.
Firstly the Origins Pocket 1500 which has a 1.4 medium gauge pocket spring and bags of medium feel upholstery layers on top. Plus no pillwotop.

It is two sided so can and should be turned each month. It also has a wool top layer for better breathability.

Origins Pocket 1500 Mattress
1: 300GSM WOOL
2: 750GSM VERY SOFT POLYESTER
3: 500GSM POLYESTER PAD
4: ONE INCH FOAM INSULATOR LAYER
5: 1500 SPUN BOND POCKET SPRINGS
TOTAL: 1550GSM
DEPTH 30-33CM

However, if you want to upgrade your sleep to a truly natural mattress with the finest pocket spring type available, the calico encased vanadium coated pocket spring, then have a look at the 100% natural Artisan Bespoke 004. Which puts you in the league of Savoir and Vispring mattresses.

It has a medium feel in the natural upholstery with a forgiving top layer. Great for pressure points. The 1600 individual pocket springs allow restless sleepers to move quickly, easily and effortlessly. Often this helps reduce the amount of fidgeting when coupled with the progressive comfort layers of this mattress. Available in 3 different spring tensions depending on your bodyweight(s).

Artisan Bespoke 004 Mattress
1: 1200GSM BLENDED BRITISH FLEECE WOOL AND COTTON
2: HAIRPROOF CAMBRIC COVER
3: 200GSM SOFT BAMBOO
4: 1200GSM PURE HORSETAIL
5: 1000GSM BONDED BRITISH FLEECE WOOL AND COTTON
6: 1600 CALICO ENCASED POCKET SPRINGS [ 49MM ] [1.28MM]

We hope that helps and gives you further mattress buying guidance. If you have any more mattress related questions please get back in touch on info@localhost or 0161 437 4419.

Sleep well
