I read in one of your articles that you always recommend the use of a topper. Is that even on a brand new mattress?

Morning Graham,

Thanks for your question about mattress toppers and when they should be used on a mattress.

To answer your question a mattress topper only needs to be used if you want to soften or deepen the mattress top comfort layer. Ie make the mattress softer or give it more sink. Mattress toppers will never firm up a mattress only soften then.

We always advise you use a mattress protector with any mattress.

This is slightly different to a mattress topper as a protector is a thin washable cover that is placed over the mattress to stop stains, sweat and debris from damaging the mattress. A mattress protector can be washed whereas a topper usually can't unless taken to a commercial laundrette.

Here's an image of a mattress protector with a mattress topper and mattress underneath. They are usually around £15-£30 can be washed and replaced if damaged.

You should always use a protector to help extend the life of a mattress but a mattress topper is optional.

We hope that helps and gives you further mattress buying guidance. If you have any more mattress related questions please get back in touch on info@localhost or 0161 437 4419.
