Artisan Bespoke Mattress Depth

Hi, I have a few questions for you:
1. Could you please clarify what the depth of your Artisan Bespoke Mattress is and also your Artisan Luxury?
2. Do you not do split tension mattresses in double?
3. We tend to like firmer feeling mattresses, but am I correct in believing that the firmer feel should come from the comfort layers, not the spring tension, i.e. a firmer spring tension may give the firm feel, but would not provide the correct support, whereas a softer spring more suited for our weight would provide the correct support and then selecting the comfort layers would then affect the 'feel'?
4. If my understanding of the above is correct, the most appropriate selection for us would be the Artisan Bespoke, rather than say, the Luxury with a firmer spring?
5. My weight is around 14 stone, and my wife is around 9 to 10 stone (she wont be specific haha), it would appear that I require the medium spring tension, and my wife the soft spring tension, is this correct, and if so what would you recommend if you do not do split tension on a double?
6. Finally would you say that your artisan mattresses are superior to your fusion range? What are the general pros and cons of each range?
Thanks for your time

Hi Hussain,

Thanks for the detailed question. The more detail the better when it comes to providing people with specific mattress advice.

I'll answer each question in turn to try and keep it easy to follow.

1. The Artisan Luxury and Bespoke have 11" side panels but their overall depth is 13" due to the tufting and undulations. This in metric is around 33cms deep, so they are really deep! You will need extra deep fitted sheets to fit them.

2. We only do a split tension in a kingsize and above as a double is too small to accommodate the split correctly.

3. You are correct, that the firmer feeling should come from the upholstery and not just the spring unit.  The spring tensions are made with weight tolerances in mind, so they give and support adequately, rather than being too giving or too supportive.  If you go for a spring that's firmer than you need it kind of negates the use of the spring.

4. If you prefer a firmer feel the Artisan Bespoke has a much firmer upholstery layer than the Artisan Luxury which is a very soft sink mattress in the top layer.

5. At your weight, we would recommend a medium spring for you and for your partner, she would be in between a soft spring, ie under 10 stone and a medium 10 stone and above. If you only have room for a double then I'd advise a medium spring for you both.  If you can move to a kingsize then I'd probably advise a split tension but this is really splitting hairs given the weight.  It also depends on if you or your partners weight fluctuate as well.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

6. The Artisan and Fusion are two completely different mattress construction types and feel.  The Artisan are more traditional pocket sprung mattresses with a more robust feel around the edge for example.  The Fusion are far more progressive in the top layers, faster sink and more 'bounce' to them.  I'd advise you try a latex mattress before opting for one as the sensation between traditional mattresses and latex ones is very different! You can find some of the pros of latex here, such as they are incredibly responsive, and you can find out about the Artisan range construction method here.

Once you've had time to digest all the above, if you need to call on 0161 437 4419 or email us for more clarity please do so.

We hope that the advice gets you closer towards finding your ideal mattress, Hussain.
