Artisan Naturals versus Origins Pocket Latex mattress

A customer asked

Hello, We are looking to buy a new bed and mattress. We have decided on a 'living storage' bed with flexi slats. We have been researching mattresses and came across your website, which is very helpful. We like the look of your Artisan Natural but also the Origins Latex mattress. We have looked at the mattresses in Bensons, Dreams and John Lewis, for research purposes only!

Initially we very much liked the feel of a Relyon Astoria mattress which has 2400 pocket springs and a 'pillow top' layer of latex. At Dreams we liked the Hypnos Beethoven mattress, which has 3000 pocket springs. At John Lewis we very much liked the Vi Spring Chatsworth and Stowe, and also the John Lewis Natural Collection Cashmere mattress. I am 5'9" and weigh approx 11 stone and my husband is 6' and weighs approx 12 stone. We both like a medium mattress. We both suffer with bad backs, although nothing serious. Which of your mattresses would you recommend, in terms of comfort and longevity?

We found the latex pillow top on the Relyon really comfortable - does that mean that we'd be best suited to your latex mattress, or are the calico pocket springs more supportive and more suitable for us?

Many thanks. .

Hi Lizzie,

Thanks for your question.

This all depends on what you want from the mattress.

Our Origins Pocket Latex 1500 is our firmest mattress in the Origins range having no sort of sink into that top layer.

John Ryan By Design Origins Latex
1 300 gsm Wool Silk blend pad
2 3cm Talalay Latex (60/40% blend) 70kg Density
3 3cm Talalay Latex (60/40% blend) 70kg Density
4 One inch HD Foam
5 1500 Spun Bond Pocket Springs

Our Artisan Naturals is very much a true medium feeling model in the top layers providing a slight sink in sensation but not too much.

John Ryan By Design Artisan Naturals Vi Spring Regal Superb
1 1200gsm Blended British Fleece Wool and Cotton. 900gsm Blended real Shetland Isle Fleece Wool and Cotton
2 Hairproof Cambric Cover Hairproof Cambric Cover
3 1250gsm Rebound Poly Cotton 1200gsm long stranded Horsetail blended with British Fleece Wool
4 1500gsm 100% Pure Mohair 1000gsm Bonded British Fleece Wool and Cotton
5 1600 Calico encased Pocket Springs [ 49mm ] [1.28mm ] 1720 Calico encased Pocket Springs [48mm ] [1.28mm ]
Total GSM 3950gsm 3100gsm

The Artisan range of mattresses is constructed using natural fibres; Ideal for anyone who identifies as a hot sleeper. Longevity also comes into it as natural fillings have longer lifespans.

We'd always advise against pillowtop mattresses as once that top layer compresses, which we hear that they do relatively quickly, there is nothing you can do.

You are always better trying a mattress for 4-6 weeks by itself to get a true feel for it. If after that period you're still finding the mattress too firm then add a topper at that stage.

With toppers you should be adding the same materials used in the mattress to emulate the sleep surface, I.e, latex with latex, foam with foam, natural fillings with something like wool.

I hope this has answered your questions fully but if you do have any further queries please don't hesitate to contact our office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards, Lee.
