Bed and Mattress - Hypermobility

Comment Check Icon 1 answers Comment Icon 0 comments

Hi

I have tried 2 different mattresses in 5 years.  I have recently been diagnosed with hypermobility and in the last year or so I've been struggling with mobility issues and pains in hips and back. I have a sprung slatted bed, which I'm happy to get rid of as think this may be part of the problem.

The current mattress was a premier inn style one, medium firm, with a topper on top, and the mattress itself being pocket sprung, which felt a bit too firm even with the topper once we had it but there you go, we'd made the decision... it is also only rotatable and not flippable (think I've just made a word up there!).  We have a Superking bed and both of us are in the 10-12 stone weight bracket.  The mattress soon developed a 'kings ridge' within a few months, so it's basically like mountain climbing crossing from one side to the other.  I hear this is common with Superking mattresses and therefore I'm happy to bin off both the bed (with those sprung slats) and the mattress and start again, this time properly.  The current mattress has also developed 'lumps and dents' from where we lie down.

Currently I spend most of the night spinning like a rotisserie chicken from side to side, to back to front, to side, to back to side, repeat...and I'm very aware of moving around so much in my sleep, because it now hurts which is why I have to move about.  I really want to invest in something that's right and going to stop actually causing me muscle and joint problems and last longer than a year.  I'd appreciate any advice and steer about what to get.

Hi Michelle,

Thank you for your question. All mattresses will settle where you lie the most and are designed to do so. The upholstery layers are compacted during manufacturing and it takes you sleeping and moving around on the mattress to soften them to their described level of comfort. As we are creatures of habit we tend to sleep in the same position which means the upholstery has settled in this area as expected but leaves the surrounding areas like new. The'hump' in the middle of the mattress is unused upholstery. If you are in the bed alone, sleep in the middle and if you are sitting reading or watching TV in bed on your own, sit in the middle so that these upholstery layers soften to be even with the rest of the mattress.

As your mattress is one sided and can only be rotated, your hips will tend to be in the same position which means this area of the mattress does not get any time to rest and regain loft.

What type of mattress topper do you have? Adding a mattress topper will provide additional comfort but will slow down the settlement of the upholstery. If you have a foam type topper, do you know the density? A higher density foam would not soften your firmer medium upholstery. Have you tried removing the topper to see if the upholstery has now settled to a comfortable level?

Given your sleep positions, I would recommend a medium level of comfort which would give you cushioning in the top layers for your shoulders and hips to sink into when sleeping on your side but is more supportive underneath so that you will not sink in too much when sleeping on your front or back. Our most popular medium upholstery mattress is the Artisan Naturals.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

At your body weights, the medium spring tension would provide the correct level of support.

I hope this helps and if you would like any further information please do not hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards

Michaela
