A customer asked

I would be very grateful if you can provide advice on the best type of bed and mattress.I have been reading about the Silentnight Geltex beds, but not sure of the best one for us!I am only 4'10.5" and weigh 6st12lb. My husband is 6' and weighs around 12st.We got a new mattress last year; it supposed to be medium firm, and did stop the aches and pains at first, but within a couple of months it started sagging.Every morning we wake up aching all over.We probably need to replace the bed base and the mattress, as the base is a Myers sprung edge which I bought in 1991; so it is quite old.My husband thinks we need a firm mattress, but I'm not convinced.I don't think a foam mattress would be suitable, as he gets too hot in bed as it is.

Hello l.r.reynolds,

Thanks for your question.

Sorry to hear of your pains with your current mattress.

At your body weight we would never recommend a firm mattress - This will definitely only make any existing pains worse or cause them where they don't already exist.

You will need a Soft spring tension to get the right support whereas your Husband will need a Medium spring tension. You might find at your body weight that you also need to add a separate mattress topper to introduce even more comfort.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

Given that you disclose the heat issues for your husband I'd recommend something with natural fillings from our Artisan range. These are traditional pocket sprung mattresses constructed with natural fillings and those fillings give a cool sleep surface.

Our Artisan Naturals is a true medium feeling model in the top layers, providing a slight sink but not too much. Our Artisan Luxury is the softest mattress we retail in those top layers giving that luxurious sink in sensation.

You should be better matched with either of those rather than a firm feeling mattress. As mentioned, you might need to add a separate wool or microfibre mattress topper from somewhere like Soak and Sleep.

I hope this has answered your questions fully but if you do have any further queries please don't hesitate to contact us on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards, Lee.
