Best Mattress for hip pain; side sleeper at 15 stone.
I am 15.2 stone my partner is 10 stone. I have a Dunlopillo Sovereign king size mattress which is 25 years old. It is firmer on three sides but softer now where I sleep. It remains supportive. I have added a Soak and Sleep topper to soften the sleeping experience but get discomfort from side sleeping with pain at my hip. The sleeping experience is too firm now for me.
I think I need a soft feel mattress that is adequately supportive?
The Origins Comfort 1000 looks a possibility. It is your softest mattress. Would it be sufficiently supportive?
The Origns Pocket 1500 seems potentially more supportive but is a medium feel. Would it be soft enough?
The Artisan Luxury has much more upholstery and of course is a better quality of mattress in construction and materials however how might it compare to the two above in term of softness and feel regarding hip pain? I'm interested in this latter aspect over all others.
Hi Brian,
Many thanks for your question about the best mattress for hip pain. It's a common question we get asked a lot. Your questions actually alludes to the answer as well which is a good sign that you're on the right track!
For side sleepers, our advice is always to choose a mattress with a slightly softer comfort layer ie the fibres on top of the support unit. This is because side sleepers hips and shoulders sink further than say a back sleeper. Meaning they need a deeper upholstery layer. You can read more on sleeping positions here like side sleepers.
It sounds like your Latex mattress although softened is now too firm for you. This can be for a number of reasons but most of the time its as your comfort, bodyweight or sleeping quality changes over the years. The fact you're adding a mattress topper is showing that you're really needing a deeper softer sleep surface in that top upholstery layer.
We do need to quickly mention spring tensions at this stage. A lot of people confuse the soft, medium or firm category of spring tension with the feel of the mattress. This is incorrect these spring 'tensions' are based purely on your body weight. For you and your partner, you both need a 1.4 gauge 'Medium' spring tension. Avoid firms or soft as these will not provide suitable support. You're looking for a soft upholstery layer, not a spring tension.
Our Origins Pocket 1500 is a true medium feel and based on your details above I wouldn't recommend this. It wont be soft enough. It's either the Origin Comfort or the Artisan Luxury that we would recommend. See the differences below to assist.
