Best mattress for lower back pain, due to a herniated disc?
I've been diagnosed with Low Back Pain and have a herniated disc for which I will soo undergo an operation for. My question is, given my condition, which type of mattress should I be using and what would John Ryan advise? I am 180cm tall, weigh between 86-90kg, use an Orthoptedic mattress (although its a bit old, over 7 years) and prefer to sleep on my side. Also, how long does it take to recieve a mattress?
Hi Edward Asagba,
Thanks for your question, a mattress can definitely help a bad back but unfortunately, it will not cure it!
Orthopaedic just means firm and usually relates to the spring gauge of 12.5g.
It is also a reference to the spring type which will no doubt be an open coil or continuous – both being inferior to pocket springs. Your body weight should be dictating spring tension you need, and your personal preference should be dictating the comfort. Incorrect spring tension can cause or worsen back pain.
Bodyweight | Spring tension |
---|---|
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg | Medium (1.4mm) |
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards | Firm (1.6mm) |
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) | Soft (1.2mm) |
Whilst we note that you are in the medium spring tension bracket, we also note that you may prefer a firmer feel due to your current mattress.
The Origins Pocket 1500 has a standard medium tension spring unit together with man-made upholstery providing an overall medium feel.
We would suggest that if you want a firmer feel, that you look at thehref="https://johnryanbydesign.co.uk/product/origins-pocket-reflex-1000/"> Origins Pocket Reflex 1000, which also has the standard medium spring unit with some man-made upholstery and a layer of reflex foam providing a slightly firmer feel than 1500, which may be more suitable for you.
