Hi,

I have looked on your website and realised you don’t sell memory foam mattresses. Unfortunately, I love them! However, my current mattress is coming to the end of its life. I usually spend up to about £1,000 on a memory foam mattress but my last purchase was 8+ years ago. Now the market is saturated with all these mattresses in a box, which I am weary of. My current mattress is a Salus memory foam on top of springs. If I recall correctly it has 2,500 springs (double) and about 6-7cm of memory foam (the genuine visco stuff). I want to purchase something similar as I sleep all night on my stomach and it has been the only mattress not to cause serious sciatic pain.

Previously I had an orthopaedic 100% memory foam mattress which I adored so much so I would buy again if I could. Cost about £1,200 (and that was in the sale) back in about 2005.

However, I am stumped with all the mattresses and choices out there. Also something a little cooler would be nice.

Can you advise? I only ask as you are probably the only company I would trust as you do not seem to have an agenda or bias like others. Thanks, Steph.

Hi Stephanie,

Many thanks for getting in touch with us about a memory foam mattress alternative. You're right that we don't sell memory foam. We prefer natural fibres and cooler materials. People tend to love or hate memory foam and there are a lot of low quality yet expensive memory foam mattresses out there. It's a bit of a wild west, unfortunately. Then you have all the boxed mattresses out there with another batch of new foams with little to no discernable detail about whats inside their mattresses.

It can make your head spin, so we are glad you have found us!

It sounds from your description that you're looking for a firmer mattress, especially given you're a front sleeper. However, even front sleepers need some give in the top comfort layer of a mattress which is maybe why you like memory foam so much.

You're right to point out the heat issue with memory foam mattresses. They are notorious for retaining heat during the night. In fact, its part of the vasco make up, they need to generate heat build-up to soften and work properly. So memory foam really isn't suitable for warmer or hot sleepers.

Alternative to Memory Foam:

We would recommend you look at a pocket sprung latex mattress type given your preference for a slow sink and firmer support. Talalay latex for example is far more breathable than synthetic memory foam and will breath far more readily at night. Allowing you to stay cooler.

Have a look at our Origins Pocket Latex 1500. It features 1500 1.4 gauge pocket springs and then uses 6cm of Talalay latex. It is 60% natural 40% synthetic which you would expect at the price point. Talalay is one of the most expensive latex manufacture types, which you can read more on here. It's 70kg in density which will give a slight sink but firmer overall comfort.

Origins Pocket Latex 1500

1: 300GSM WOOL SILK BLEND PAD

2: 3CM TALALAY LATEX (60/40% BLEND) 70KG DENSITY

3: 3CM TALALAY LATEX (60/40% BLEND) 70KG DENSITY

4: ONE INCH HD FOAM

5: 1500 SPUN BOND POCKET SPRINGS (MEDIUM 1.4 OR FIRM 1.6 TENSION)

TOTAL DEPTH 30-33CM

Have a look at that model and then please get back in touch if you need any more information. There's also some detail below on the differences between memory foam and latex to assist.

Sleep well
