Hi there,

1. Is a Medium/Firm mattress Medium comfort on one side, Firm comfort on the other that's available?

2. Are natural mattress fibres cooler in the summer than synthetic man made ones?

Hi Aron,

Thanks for your comment about mattress tensions and comfort preferences.

Can you have 2 different pocket spring tensions?

You can have one side firm and one side medium in the spring tension. A lot of retailers misrepresent this as having one side feeling firm and one side feeling medium (ie the comfort layers) but this is untrue.

Spring tensions in mattresses are based on your bodyweight. That's because the pocket springs that we make come in 3 tensions. 1.2 (soft), 1.4 (medium or 1.6 (firm) gauges. This is the thickness of the wire which makes them harder to compress when thicker (1.6 gauge) or easier if thinner (1.2 gauge). Ie a firmer spring needs more weight to load and pushed back more than a softer spring ie 1.2 gauge.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

As peoples body weight can vary between sleepers you can end up with two people sharing a bed that ned different spring tensions. Think of a 50kg sleeper vs 110kg sleeper.

We offer different tensions in our split tension mattresses (kingsize and above) or our zip and link mattress models, This means you can both get the perfect spring tension for the best nights sleep.

Comfort layers must be the same
However, the ultimate mattress feel is based predominantly on the comfort layers or mattress upholstery that is placed on top of the pocket spring unit. These must always be the same as if not they tend to compress and settle at different rates. So you can't have say a firm feel on one half and then a softer feel on the other.
Overtime what will happen is one side will compress quicker leading to a very uneven mattress. It's the same for the depth of the mattress. These have to be the same to ensure a consistent sleep surface.

What you can do though is add a topper to one side of the mattress in a zip and link model which will help soften that side up without messing with the ultimate depth too much. This is the best means of softening the mattress comfort layers.

Are natural fibres cooler in summer?

Natural fibre mattresses are vastly cooler in the summer than their man-made synthetic counterparts. In particular memory foam which requires and retains heat to mould and work properly.

Natural fibres help wick away moisture and also allow far greater airflow than polyester and other white fibres. This, in turn, ensures that your mattress is breathable. Keeping it cooler and dryer during warmer months and warmer in the winter months. You will feel a noticeable difference between a man made polyester mattress and a natural fibre calico encased pocket spring version.

Natural fibres also have a far longer shelf life and are more resilient against compression and bounce back quicker than man-made fibres.

Have a look at our Artisan Bespoke 004 mattress for an example of a 100% Natural fibre mattress that's also available in a zip and link or split tension.
