A customer asked

I am 51 and have chronic lower back pain and bursitis. I need a supportive but comfortable mattress at an affordable price. I sleep alone. I am 5'6 9 and a half stone. My base is beech sprung slats. Would the origins comfort 1000 be good for me on this base with my pain issues or would an Origins Pocket 1500 be better?

Hi Catherine,

Sorry to hear of your chronic back pain.

Both mattresses would be suitable for you at your weight and height. The difference between the two is the Origins Comfort is softer in the top layer. I'm 10 stone and had one for many years as I quite like the softer feel in the top layer. Even though it is our starter entry model is a cracking mattress and I really loved it.

John Ryan By Design Origins Comfort
1 750gsm Very Soft Polyester
2 500gsm Polyester Pad
3 One Inch Foam Insulator Layer
4 1000 Spun Bond Pocket Springs

However, if you prefer a medium feel comfort then the Origins 1500 would be suitable. You're only slightly built so we think that maybe this will be a bit too supportive.

John Ryan By Design Origins 1500
1 300gsm Wool
2 750gsm Very Soft Polyester
3 500gsm Polyester Pad
4 One Inch Foam Insulator Layer
5 1500 Spun Bond Pocket Springs

The Origins comfort is more forgiving and with you sleeping on your own this may be a better option to help cradle you more.

Both of these options will be suitable to be placed on top of a slatted base as long as the gaps between the slats do not exceed 3". If the gap is greater than 3" we advice that you board over the slats using a 3 - 5mm piece of MDF or Plywood essentially turning your base into a platform top.

All the best
