Choosing a mattress for someone who is bedbound.

Hi there,
I hope you can help. I'm looking to replace our current latex topped one sided mattress (I know!) as it's developed a "sag" in the middle of my side and is now about 9 years old. What complicates our choice somewhat is that I actually spend pretty much 24 hours a day in bed as I have a long term illness. I also have, just for a little extra sprinkles on top, arthritis in my hips and a chronic pain condition called fibromyalgia. I tend to sleep on my side and often wake with pain in my hips which I think is exacerbated by the mattress as I've slept in beds in other places which don't hurt me (the Premier Inn Hypnos mattresses are very comfortable although I don't particularly want another pillow top - I just mention this in case it helps with calibrating my comfort level).
With our current mattress we use a 6cm dual layer feather mattress topper which has certainly helped with comfort levels, but I think I would struggle with moving around on a soft mattress - muscle fatigue means changing position can be difficult. I also find that I am affected by my husband moving around on his side of the bed - I get jiggled and bounced around which I find very uncomfortable, despite how careful he is in trying not to! I looked into getting zip linked king size mattresses, but unfortunately these are outside our price range. We have a king size bed frame which we are keen to keep, and we have a restricted staircase which means we cannot get a divan bed up to our room, so we will have to stick with a king size mattress.
We are both of similar height and weight - 1 am 5'10" and he is 5'11" and we both weigh between 15 and 16 stone. So, is it possible to recommend a comfortable mattress that will be able to stand pretty much 24 hour occupation and that can reduce movement between partners without compromising on support? We are presently considering either an Origin or an Artisan 1500 but any advice on choosing would be great.
Thanks so much in advance for your advice :)

Hi there,

We're sorry to hear you're struggling so much with your current mattress and sleeping condition. We've written extensively about horsehair a super robust resilient fibre. It has a medium feel in the upholstery layers. If your budget doesn’t stretch then the Artisan 1500 would also be suitable. This is irrespective of whether you regularly turn or rotate the product to spread the wear and tear. This is because you’re using the mattress a lot more than say a sleeper spending 6-8 hours a night in their mattress. However, this should lead to a complete sag or failure of the mattress is the correct spring tension and upholstery are chosen.">mattresses for people who are in pain or spend longer amounts of time in bed here which maybe useful.

I have no doubt that your situation is not helped by the age of your current mattress and by the fact that it is in 24 hour use. Which makes it really difficult to recommend a mattress thats going to be able to accommodate this. The issue with prolonged use is that your mattress is not going to last as long as your getting far more use out of it.

At your weights, I'd probably recommend a firmer spring even though you're on the cusp of a medium spring tension. The reason for this is the continued use of the bed so a firmer spring will offer better support for such continued use. That you will be looking at a much shorter shelflife for your mattress either way.

If you paired it up with a high-quality base and avoided a cheaper slatted base this may help extend the life of your mattress too.

Spring Tension Wire diameter (Gauge) Weight Range
Soft 1.2mm Bespoke Tension (Please Call)
Medium 1.4mm Upto 16 stone
Firm 1.6mm 16 stone plus
Extra Firm / Orthopaedic 1.9mm 20 stone plus

Please have a look at our Artisan 1500 in a firm spring tension or the Artisan Bespoke and then maybe give us a call for more advice?

All the best
