Thanks for getting in touch about our range of hand made bed frames.

This is a great question about central support in bed frames and bases. Our bed frames do have a central support joint/beam in king size and above. This is for increased structural soundness of the bases we hand made from UK beechwood. Given that our high end mattresses are heavy, due to the high filling content, any bases need to be well made. Cheaper slatted wooden bases are simply not made for higher end mattresses weighing 60kg plus. we would advise you always check with a retailer what the weight limit is for the mattress plus sleepers.

This central support bar that we use is a beechwood rail that runs from the headend to the footend supported by a bracket on the headend and on the footend/footboard. It doesn't require an awkward central leg (it doesn’t touch the floor) as some slatted bases do. Which can make cleaning under the base and sleeping awkward as you can sometimes feel the central leg on slatted bases.

Unlike sprung slats where the slats can flex past the central support, causing the 'humpback bridge' affect'. This is where the central bar becomes very noticeable when you're in bed. We use an upholstered foam passed bed base pad. So there are no slats. This also means that the central support has the same amount of padding and protection as the entire surface of the bed pad.

This removes the issue often found with slats being too far apart, damaging mattresses, causing squeaky or wobbly bed bases.
