Does an edge support system negate the need to board over slats?

Hi John,
Firstly, extremely informative and just what i was looking for.
i currently have a piece of MDF board on my sprung slatted bed (it does not cover the entirety of the slatted surface, but is pretty close) and have just purchased an expensive "sealy" bed here in Australia. after reading your comments to others i think that my current MDF with a thickness of about 20mm is far to thick and i should invest in pegboard between 3-6mm to increase flexibility, is this correct? if so, why is the flexibility of thinner materials better for covering wooden sprung slats?
also a point to make, the mattress has also incorporated "An edge support system that encases the mattress on all sides and the bottom to offer great stability and a long-lasting edge."
when shown this edge support system, it was quite solid and meant that you could not feel the springs on the side and im presuming on the bottom also. does this feature of the mattress mean that using pegboard on the slats is not needed?
Thanks in advance,
Tom

Hi Tom,

Thank you for your enquiry on our website. The main reasons for using either MDF sheeting or pegboard are to provide a uniform surface upon which the mattress will sit and prevent the mattress ridging on the underside as a result of slipping into the gaps between the slats.  If this happens you will not get the correct support from your mattress springs and over time your mattress will become damaged.

If the bed slats are in excess of 7cm apart, any mattress, whether supported or otherwise, will in time depress into the gaps. If it is a double sided mattress, without the barrier, when turned the ridging created by the gaps will make the mattress feel uncomfortable. The reason for using a thinner more flexible barrier is so that if you have a sprung slatted base, you do not lose the entire benefit of the springing in the slats. Your thicker MDF will make the base feel very rigid and inflexible. If the slats are less than 7 cm apart an old blanket or duvet will suffice to prevent ridging in the underside of the mattress.
