Help and advice please
I have a wooden sprung slat bed frame and full latex mattress medium both about 6 years old. I am unsure if it is the mattress or base that is causing me lower back ache and sometimes hip pain. I am also a side fidget sleeper and bad sleeper of note. I can also tell where the middle supporting length of the bed is when I lie down in I move closer to the middle of the bed if that helps to show I seem to feel every niggle. As funds are limited how do I know which may need to be replaced. Prior to this I had a sprung divan bed base and latex sprung mattress both were excellent but on getting a new latex mattress couldn't find it with pocket sprung hence this decision. Please help, ps, 5ft 2, 9stone, side poor fidget sleeper.
Hi Tina,
Thank you for your question. Your previous pocket-sprung base cushioned your mattress. A sprung slatted base gives the illusion of a softer feel as the slats move up and down. Sometimes with a sprung slatted base, the mattress can sit at the top of the arches rather than push them down, which can make you feel like you are rolling into the middle or sometimes even look as if the mattress has dipped or sagged in the middle. Boarding over the base with MDF or Plywood, or even pegboard if you are concerned about air circulation, will provide the mattress with a uniform surface.

Has your latex mattress and base combination been comfortable for you for the last 6 years and the problems you are getting quite recent, or have you had the problem since getting them? If the problems have always been there, this would indicate that this combination isn't working for you. To tell whether the mattress or the base is the issue, you should try the mattress on the floor for a week or two, this will give your body time to adjust to the firmer support.
If the mattress feels fine on the floor, boarding your base with MDF or Plywood will solve the issues you are having. If the mattress is too firm on the floor, this will tell you the mattress isn't right for you. You could purchase a pocket-sprung base, which has worked for you previously. Alternatively, given that latex requires pressure to be able to mould to you, at your very light body weight, you will not make much impression on the latex. Adding a soft density latex mattress topper would provide additional comfort.
I hope this helps and if you would like any further information, please do not hesitate to contact the office on 01061 437 4419.
Kind Regards
Michaela
