Help please on mattress replacement

A customer asked

Hi, I am about to buy a new bed and am now totally confused after reading the replies to some of the comments above. I was looking at the Sleepeezee Sovereign 3000 Cashmere bed from Carpetright. They want £1160 for it without drawers, £50 for two drawers or £100 for four. It has a pillow top but after reading your comments about a pillow top, I feel put off this now. I don't know what bed to buy now. Presently, we have a Sleepeezee Malvern, king size which we bought in 1996 and I think we need a new bed as I wake up with a sore neck in the mornings (I sleep on a feather pillow but had a dunlopillo latex pillow for many years). We also have two pieces of wooden board under the mattress to give it more support. I would like to buy a super kingsize now but don't know what sort of bed to buy. I weigh 17stone and my husband weighs 13stone. I like a bed that is not hard but not too soft either. I like to feel like I'm sleeping on "air" as it were and my husband is not fussy as he says he can sleep anywhere!

Can you please advise me on what type of bed I need?

I am also a very restless sleeper, I toss and turn all night long and always have. I was hoping to buy my bed this weekend but doesn't look like this is now going to happen!

Many thanks for your advice .

Hi Ella.

Sorry for the delay in replying.

As with all things you need to know what you are buying.

The first step is to see what your money is getting you by analysing the contents of this particular mattress: The official specification is as follows: [Carpetright: 3000 Cashmere Mattress.

KS: £2299.00 (No price for SKS)] With 3000 pocketed springs giving you independent support over two layers, 47mm of Visco elastic memory foam and 30mm of iFoam memory foam, there aren’t many beds which work as hard as this to give you the perfect night’s sleep.

This mattress is one of our best yet.

Sitting under the mock pillow top finish, the 47mm of Visco memory foam moulds to your body providing greater support than traditional fillings.

What’s more another layer of high density iFoam, with pressure sensitivity, reacts faster to your body position giving you a consistent and luxurious level of support.

You’ll find the cashmere knitted panel is softer than wool and it also provides insulation and moisture absorbing properties.

We’ve used Outlast yarn so if you’re looking for the ultimate in temperature control, you’ll find it here.

[END] To be perfectly honest this is quite a good composition for a mattress and will no doubt be quite suitable for your needs and requirements - However .., It is most certainly NOT worth anything close to this sum of money.

The price you gave me (£1160.) I cannot match up with the products on-line.

Please confirm.

if we look at what the mattress consists of we see that it is only 5cm of Memory Foam backed with 3cm of i-Foam on a pocket sprung unit (the count at this moment is irrelevant).

Your money can be better spent by purchasing a decent two sided pocket sprung mattress (1500 pockets will be sufficient for you both) and adding your own layers of additional upholstery in the form of a topper.

As a supplementary note for budgets around the thousand pond mark.

use our Artisan Naturals [KS: £1085.

Feb 2013] as the benchmark to see what your money should be getting you.

Hope this helps.

John and Ryan.

Dear J&R thank you for your reply.

The bed in the Carpetright shop in Stevenage, Herts, is definitely advertised at £1160 (that's mattress and base) plus the £120 for four drawers and has been this price for some time now.

I, too, looked it up on their website and found that it is advertised at the higher price.

I find the bed very comfortable because I go into the shop often and lie down on it for about 20 minutes at a time.

I think they're getting used to me now!!

However, as you mentioned, a pillow top is going to wear out quicker so I've now changed my mind and will opt for a two-sided mattress.

You say that your Artisan Natural (KS £1085) is the one to compare with.

On your website, I couldn't see an Artisan divan or mattress for the price you've quoted.

Unless that is the price before tax?

The Artisan Natural superking on your website is priced at £1325 plus £515 for the base.

I would like to buy the best bed I can afford, about £1500 for a superking divan, maybe slightly higher, but only if necessary.

Obviously, I would like to keep it as low as I can!

I think I've more or less decided I want to buy my bed from you, I just want to be told which bed is going to be suitable for me and my pocket!

I would be happy for you to make a suggestion.

P.S.

what does the “KS” stand for?Stands for Kingsize.

Many thanks again for your advice.

Hi again Ella.

The point of the price comparison was to show you what you can feasibly expect to get for a similar price - as there was no price indicator for SKS (Superking) I used the KS (Kingsized) as the comparison.

The mattress you are looking at is just a memory foam on springs/" title="pocket spring">pocket spring construction.

For around the £1000 mark your money can be certainly better spent - Look at our Origins Pocket Latex for example - also coming in at the £1000 mark.

Taking into account your bodyweights, I feel this will be more suitable for you for comfort and more importantly, durability.

The mattress you are looking at is not a pillow top design per se, it is a mock pillow top which is only a design feature.

The construction is built from the spring unit upwards, same as any one sided mattress.

Finally Ella, the point of this website is to give you the basis of what you need to know before making your purchase.

If you think the bed you tried at Carpetright will suit your needs then by all means go for it.

I would however, as a final stage of your search is to look at a few SKS divan sets with a 5-7cm Memory Foam on 2000 pocket spring units to be used as a price comparison.

John and Ryan.
