A customer asked

Hi, I am looking for a kingsize mattress for myself. I am 18 stone plus and suffer from a bad back and lots of other medical problems so I do spend a lot of my time in my bed, unfortunately.

I am always hot all the time even in the winter. At the moment I have a memory foam mattress which is too hot for me and getting uncomfortable I have had it about 6 years so time for something new and better to hopefully help my budget is between £1000-£1,500 at the most. I do have a very strong pine bed which I will be keeping and need to put the mdf on it for the new mattress I get. As I see your idea on here which I thankyou for as I didn't know.

Do you have any ideas and help for me to look at that you have please many thanks michael. Ps, I am a little worried about getting a mattress without trying it first but we shall see. I did have my eye on a igel Aries mattress at Benson's for around £1,200 but hoping you have something more suitable for me thankyou

Hi Anthony,

Thanks for your question. It's a common complaint about memory foam being both incredibly warm and sagging very quickly.

This is because memory foam retains and expels heat as part of its 'visco elastic' property. It's also non-breathable so it traps hot air too. It's a real drawback with memory foam.

Coolest mattress options:

Natural fibres are the coolest of all mattress upholstery fibres. Whereas foams, memory foam and hybrid gels will all retain far more heat. So if you're a hot sleeper a natural fibre mattress is your best bet to stay cool and comfortable at night.

At your body weight you're going to need a firm 1.6 gauge pocket spring, which we can provide in any of our Artisan Mattress ranges. It really then depends on which comfort layers you prefer. Soft, medium or firm?

We have a really detailed article on comfort layers here.

I'd maybe have a look at our Artisan 1500 mattress as a starting point in a firm spring tension. This hand made mattress will also be fine on a slatted mattress base.

Then get back in touch if you have any more questions and we can take it from there.

All the best
John & Ryan
