How does Linen compare to other natural fillings?

Clare

I am considering a John Lewis Natural Collection Linen Mattress - the current one has 5000 springs, but I can see a few others available new on places like ebay with 4000 springs.
So, what is there to say about linen flax (which the more detailed info refers to) compared to other fillings. The top layer is linen missed with cotton and then there are 2 other layers which are wool and cotton, followed by wool, cotton and hemp. After that there is a layer of the mini HD springs.
This linen model seems to be one up from the Cotton Natural mattress and one down from Egytptian Cotton and Yorkshire wool models.
Wondered if linen will give a firmer or softer feel and if it has any merits or disadvantages over other fillings.
Many thanks.

Hi Clare,

As with all models in the John Lewis Natural collection, the Linen mattress does not have specific details of the levels of upholstery in terms of GSM (grams per square metre), which makes providing any opinion as to quality and performance impossible. I think that you are mistaken in your understanding that this mattress contains a level of linen in the upholstery, in fact, the reference to linen refers to the outer cover only and plays no part in the upholstery. I am not aware of any manufacturer who includes a layer of linen within the upholstery of their mattresses

John Ryan By Design Artisan Naturals Vi Spring Regal Superb
1 1200gsm Blended British Fleece Wool and Cotton. 900gsm Blended real Shetland Isle Fleece Wool and Cotton
2 Hairproof Cambric Cover Hairproof Cambric Cover
3 1250gsm Rebound Poly Cotton 1200gsm long stranded Horsetail blended with British Fleece Wool
4 1500gsm 100% Pure Mohair 1000gsm Bonded British Fleece Wool and Cotton
5 1600 Calico encased Pocket Springs [ 49mm ] [1.28mm ] 1720 Calico encased Pocket Springs [48mm ] [1.28mm ]
Total GSM 3950gsm 3100gsm

As far as the level of springs are concerned, it is easy to get carried away by the hype associated with a greater number of springs in a mattress and whilst they do provide a level of support and comfort, the overall advantages of having so many springs are not readily evident and personally, I would opt for more upholstery than extra springs. I trust that this is of some help to you.
