David Parker

I have an IKEA bed frame with an IKEA slatted bed base and have been considering a Hypnos Cantata mattress, which I've tried in a reputable retailer and found comfortable. Descriptions of this mattress, albeit without much of the nitty-gritty information that I know you need to make a useful comparison, are on the Hypnos website and, in slightly more detail, on the Land of Beds website. I'm 61, 5'9", weigh between 8½ and 9 stone and sleep on my back or left side. A) Does this mattress seem to be suitable for someone of my build? B) Is it a suitable mattress for the bed frame and base mentioned? C) Would any addition to/amendment to the bed base be desirable or necessary? D) Would a mattress topper be necessary and, if so, do you have a recommendation? E) Now that I've come across your website and been impressed by what you have to say and offer, which John Ryan mattress might provide a suitable alternative to the Hypnos for me, given the information above?.

Hi David,

Thank you for your enquiry.

Before we provide answers to your specific points, we would advise that the published details of the Hypnos product on all sites is quite limited and does not provide information such as the number of springs and the upholstery in terms of GSM (grams per square metre), making any form of comparison impossible, although it does confirm it has a medium feel.

Having said that we will try and guide you to one of our products, which may suit.

Dealing with your questions in order we would comment as follows:-

A) Because of the lack of information available about the Hypnos products, we are unable to provide an opinion as to performance or suitability.

B) For the same reason we cannot comment, other than to say

C) if you were using on a slatted base, we would advise placing some form, or barrier, preferably thin (3-5mm) MDF over the slats to provide the mattress with a uniform surface upon which to sit and prevent ridging occurring as a result of the mattress dipping into the gaps between the slats.

D) Mattress toppers are used primarily to provide an additional comfort layer and soften a mattress which may be feeling too firm.

We would always advise waiting until you have had your mattress for around 4-5 weeks before deciding on whether to purchase a topper.

This is because it can take that long for your body to get used to a new mattress, and if you buy one at the same time, it may turn out to be an unnecessary expense.

E) With your particular body weight, we would recommend a soft spring tension/feel mattress.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

To that end we would suggest that you look at the Origins Comfort 1000, which has a standard medium spring unit with soft man made upholstery layers, providing that overall softer feel.

We hope that the above is of assistance to you, but if you require any further advice or guidance, please call our office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards Gary
