Hi Team,
I find your website excellent helping with reviewing mattresses which are a great help.

I noticed on your review of the Hypnos Wool Origins 10 mattress the calico springs were noted as optimal for a mattress type.

I currently have the origins wool 6 (medium) which i find very unsupportive and sinking in the middle after 2 weeks. Therefore, I am in the process of returning through the 60 night sleep trial in exchange for an origins wool 8 firm tension (there are adaptiv springs in this model)

The mattress that I also considered (although a few hundred more) was the Vispring Traditional Bedstead and Elite mattress. However, I’m unsure Vispring filling is the same quality in these mattress types than of the Origins wool 8 I have ordered. The one thing I guess is use of calico springs in the Vispring.

To note I am roughly 87kg.

If you would be able to help in a short comparison between the Hypnos and Vispring mattress types I’ve listed that would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Danny

Hi Danny,

Thank you for your question. Both the Hypnos Origins Wool 6 and the Hypnos Origins Wool 8 are constructed with the same 8 fleeces of wool. That is approx 16.3 kg of soft luxurious wool for you to sink into. Wool is ideal for wicking away heat and moisture but without any supporting layers, it does tend to compress quite quickly. Soft upholstery layers are more suitable for side sleepers as they require cushioning for their shoulders and hips.

The only difference between these two Hypnos mattresses is the springs, which the Wool 8 has two tiers that give the mattress a softer support and a bouncier feel to the mattress. They describe the mattress as being available in a medium or firm comfort but as this is determined by the upholstery layers this will be the same. The difference between the medium and firm is the spring tension which should be determined by your body weight and height. At your body weight, we would pair you with the medium spring tension to give you the correct level of support.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

As it is the upholstery layers, by their amounts and the way that they are layered, that determine how the mattress feels, you need to take into account how you sleep along with how you like a mattress to feel. We do not recommend soft upholstery layers for those that are front or back sleepers. This is due to the fact that if you sink in too much in these positions, it can cause lower back and neck pain.

The Vispring Traditional Bedstead and the Vispring Elite also have wool upholstery layers that give that soft sink-in feel but they do have calico pocket springs which are much more breathable than the spun-bonded springs that Hypnos use.

Our closest comparison to all 4 of these mattresses is the Artisan Luxury. This has a softer medium feel in the upholstery layers as we sandwich the layers of wool and cotton with horsehair and horsetail to provide support for the softer layers so that they do not compress quickly.

CONSTRUCTION AND UPHOLSTERY LAYERS OF THE ARTISAN LUXURY MATTRESS

All fiber-filled mattresses will settle where you sleep. When a mattress is constructed all the upholstery layers are compacted and it takes you sleeping and moving around on the mattress to soften them. As we are creatures of habit we tend to sleep in the on position which means the upholstery under us softens leaving the surrounding upholstery like new which can give the appearance of sagging but is in fact quite natural. To even this out we recommend using the whole sleep surface and turning the mattress over regularly.

I hope this helps and if you would like any further information or would like to discuss your individual needs, please do not hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards
Michaela
