Is latex better than memory foam?

Hi John & Ryan, I have found your website invaluable and now look at the branded mattresses for sale in stores with a completely different light!

We were in Bensons Beds yesterday and saw a Silentnight Enrich Kingsize. It had a further 15% off which was finishing today!

That took it to £594.99 (reduced from some ridiculous "original" prices around £1700!!). At the moment we have a memory foam topper on our mattress (a slumberland ortho pocket deluxe...800 individual pocket springs). We have had the mattress about 9 years and love the memory foam topper as it seems to give a lot of support (I tend to get episodes of bad backs) and we don't feel each other moving around at night. I'm interested to know why you dislike memory foam so much and how/if latex is an alternative to it?

We are thinking of replacing the mattress and topper as all our furniture is away getting re-sanded and we are getting new flooring and as the mattress is around that "10" year age they talk about it seemed a good time to get a new one. Our bed is solid pine with a slatted base (the slats are about 2 inches apart). My husband is 5'8" and I am 5'1". He is around 12 stone and I am around 10 stone. Having looked at the mattresses you have available I really would be interested in how you think they'd compare to the one we saw and whether they would match our needs (I felt the artisan range was out of our price range but the other range was within it) .

Hi Joy.

The reasons we are not particularly keen on memory foam are many.

However, the main one is that many models using this product are completely overhyped and overpriced.

There are also many testaments of disappointment on the internet affirming this.

There is no doubt about it that latex is a far better component in terms of value, durability and comfort when compared to memory foam.

They are both foam products and if faced with a choice of either memory foam or latex for a similar price (and depths) then latex would be / should be the obvious choice.

There is a hierarchy of mattress components used and Memory Foam and Latex falls within the mid range.

The lowest being polyester in all its guises, and the high end being wools, cottons and Hair (Horsetail, Cashmere, Mohair etc).

However, the important factor in all this is to bear in mind that it is the actual weight of the component that gives you the value.

For example, on our Origins latex 1500 we give you a latex depth of 6cm.

This should be your starting point of comparison.

It becomes clear that if a memory foam mattress has 5cm of Memory Foam for a similar price then the value in the latex model becomes apparent.

Also, all latex is not the same - they are all blends of one sort or another (natural and synthetic) our listing shows you that our blend is 60/40 and that there are no fillers used such as graphite (added for fire retardancy) we give you the source etc.

When making comparisons you can use our model to glean comparative information from other manufacturers and retailers.

And this brings me to The Silentnight Enrich.

I have just read the description of this product and there is absolutely nothing there telling me where my (your) money is going.

The Ecomemory fibre they mention is a relatively new product - far superior to polyester - but how it measures up to foam or memory foam is as yet unproven for durability and comfort.

The description also states usage of Ecobreathe Fibre - again another polyester product and on the pyramid of quality this would sit just above regular polyester wadding.

The absence of a combined upholstery weight incorporating this upholstery would lead me to question further.

Finally Joy, taking the model you looked at as an indication of your budget, it has to be said that unfortunately this falls within a low price bracket.

It is also the price bracket that the bulk of all people assign to their purchase and therefore the choice of product within this price range is huge.

The available list of components able to be used for the mattress to retail for this - is not.

As you are currently using memory foam and have no gripe against it - you should use that as your starting point.

Draw up a list of memory foam mattresses based on a 1500 pocket sprung system and see which mattress gives you the most memory foam (by depth) for your money.

John Ryan By Design Origins 1500
1 300gsm Wool
2 750gsm Very Soft Polyester
3 500gsm Polyester Pad
4 One Inch Foam Insulator Layer
5 1500 Spun Bond Pocket Springs

Once you have a basic list of comparable models your task will become easier.

John and Ryan.
