Hi We think that we are about to buy a JR 'Luxury' bed (medium, I'm 12 stone (5'8") and my wife is 10 stone (5'10") Our friends bought a Vi-Spring Shetland; they find that it feels really luxurious when they have just turned it, but that quite quickly it 'nests' and feels a bit more ordinary. Do you think that the more or less monoculture of wool in the Shetland is what causes this and would the multiple layers in the JRL keep the lofted feel for longer. We've had a mattress that 'nested' before and didn't enjoy it.

Hi Andrew,

Thank you for your question.

With the body weights provided you are both matched to a Medium spring tension. The spring tension is what provides you with support from within the mattress itself.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

It becomes then all about what you want from the top layers, also known as the comfort layers of the mattress.

The Artisan Luxury is the softest mattress that we offer in terms of the comfort layers. You very much get that sink in feel from these top layers as it is constructed from 100% natural fibres. Due to the inclusion of natural fibres and materials it does mean that these mattresses can take up to a year to fully settle. As such, it will soften down over time but with our own range it won't be quite so instant.

You are correct that the monoculture of the wool in the Shetland is what causes that quicker change.

We always recommend that our mattresses are used for 4-6 weeks to get a true and accurate feel of the mattress. Any mattress, particularly a naturally fibre filled mattress will soften over time, and any new mattress will always feel firmer to start with as the springs nor the fillings have been compressed.

We also advise that the mattress is fully turned and rotated once a month in order to evenly distribute wear and tear across both sides of the mattress.

Please see the article here for more information on mattress maintenance and care.

I hope this has answered your questions fully but if you do have any further queries then please don't hesitate to contact me on 0161 413 2210.

Kind Regards, Lee.
