Hi there.... so we're thinking about a new base and mattress and like many others we've 'done the rounds' of department stores and bed warehouses.
The bed i liked the feel of most was in my local Peter Greens in Chandlers Ford Hampshire. It was lovely and squishy and soft, and like others have said "like floating on a cloud". Tried the bed next to it and is was as solid as a rock. The salesman then pointed out that although it was the same mattress the other bed had a sprung base and this one didn't. Which got me to wondering.....
We currently have a (very nice) oak framed bed with slats purchased from Oakfurnitureland, with a Highgrove Strathmore KineTech 2000 Series mattress purchased from Rownhams Bed Centre. I'm 5' 10" and 84kgs and my other half is 5' 4" and 67kgs.
So the (stupid.?) question is.... we like the idea of changing to an ottoman base, for the storage potential, but also like the idea of a sprung base as it was soooo comfy. Would it be possible to put a latex (or foam?) topper UNDER the mattress to give a sprung base feel.? Failing that crazy idea.... what ottoman base and mattress combination can you recommend to give that 'cloud like' feeling.
Many thanks for taking the time to read through my crazy idea.... which came to me in the night..!!

Hi Nick,

Thanks for your question and feedback; Always great hearing feedback like this.

I wouldn't really advocate placing a latex topper beneath the mattress. There are a number of reasons for this; The topper won't really emulate a sprung base feel and not only that but the sheer weight of the mattress will probably compress the topper far too much and potentially cause damage.

At your body weights we'd match you both with a Medium spring tension to get the right level of support;

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

The softest mattress that we retail, effectively giving that cloud like sensation, would be our Artisan Luxury. This is a traditional pocket sprung mattress constructed with natural fillings; Ideal for anyone who identifies as a hot sleeper.

Whilst we are an online only retailer and don't have a showroom of our own we do have some comparison models in stores such as Furniture Village, Harrods, House of Fraser or And So To Bed.

Our Artisan Luxury compares with the Vi-Spring Devonshire. Our Ottoman base is a solid top base, constructed using Canadian Spruce, making it our sturdiest base that we retail. A solid top base will give any mattress placed a top it a slightly firmer. To get a true feel for the Ottoman feel with that mattress I'd advise to ask the showroom to place the mattress on to the floor. This will emulate that solid top base surface.

I hope this has answered your questions fully but if you do have any further queries please don't hesitate to contact our office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards, Lee.
