Making an orthopaedic mattress softer

A customer asked

Hi John and Ryan, We have an firm orthopedic mattress which was replaced after a flood on as goodwill gesture by our landlord.

However the model they got was a firmer mattress in the same range and a tad too firm.

My wife isn't sleeping so well on it (the original orthopedic requirement was really for me).

We are both of similar size (5ft 10) and I am 11st where as my wife is about 9st.

I am thinking that the options here are some kind of topper (memory foam?), or perhaps just getting a new mattress.

What would you guys recommend here?

Hi Ian,

The introduction of a topper may well resolve the issues at present and this would be the better financial solution in the short term.

In the first instance, before spending any money, try placing two old duvets on the top of your mattress to see if this makes a difference.

If it doesn't help a new mattress may be the solution.

Please let me know how you get on with trying the duvets.

Kind regards Mike.
