Mattress advice for a 14 stone side sleeper and 16 stone stomach sleeper
Hi, I recently bought an Emma mattress and it is killing my back and hips. I toss and turn due to my hips aching and can wake up with varying degrees of back pain. I've tried a pillow between the legs etc. I am a side sleeper of 14 stone, my husband is very comfortable though as a 16 stone stomach sleeper.
We originally had a medium firm Sealy orthopaedic mattress with latex topper which was great for 10 years, however the last year or so gave my husband a bad back.
What mattress would you recommend for us please?
Hi Michelle,
Thank you for your question. It can be confusing when looking for a new mattress as there is much to consider such as how you want the mattress to feel and your sleep position along with the level of support you need.
As a side sleeper, your shoulders and hips require more cushioning. Your current Emma mattress is not providing this and causing pressure pain in your hips. You are also pivoting on your shoulder and hip which is putting pressure on your lower spine. As a front sleeper, the firmer comfort is better for your husband. When the mattress is too soft for front sleepers it causes the lower back to overarch causing pain in this area.
Bodyweight | Spring tension |
---|---|
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg | Medium (1.4mm) |
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards | Firm (1.6mm) |
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) | Soft (1.2mm) |
At your body weights, we would pair you both with the medium spring tension to provide the correct level of support. We would never recommend a firm spring tension for anyone under 17 stone or an orthopaedic spring tension for anyone under 20 stone. You need to be these body weights to activate the springs, if the springs are not moving with you they are not supporting you.
The upholstery fibres, also known as the comfort layers, on top of the springs determine how the mattress feels and not the spring tension. Given your husband finds your Emma mattress comfortable I would recommend the firmer medium level of comfort of the Origins Reflex 1000, if this is too firm for you you can add a mattress topper to your half which would make it feel more medium. In the meantime, if you have a spare duvet you could put this under your sheet to provide your shoulders and hips with a little more cushioning.
I hope this helps and if you would like any further information please do not hesitate to call our friendly team on 0161 437 4419.
Kind Regards
Michaela
