Hi Gill,

Thanks for contacting us with regard to a new mattress.   Finding the right mattress can be a minefield as there is so much information out there which can create a bit of confusion.

It used to be advised that if you had a bad back that you required a firm mattress however this is not the case as it really is about obtaining the correct level of support and comfort.

A Traditional Pocket Sprung Mattress is made up in two ways with the internal spring unit providing support and this is based on body weight and height whereas all the fillings which are on top of those springs providing the level of comfort and this is dictated by sleeping positions.   A side sleeper would require either a soft level of comfort or a medium depending on preference, a back sleeper really does require something more medium as this would keep the spine aligned whereas a front sleeper requires something that is firmer so that the tummy area does not sink in too far which would then create an unnatural arch in the back.

Medium
Upto 16 stone / 101kg

Firm
Over 16 stone / 101kg

From the information provided by you, I would recommend looking at a mattress which will provide you with an overall medium level of comfort as this will allow your shoulders and hips to sink in slightly so as to avoid pressure pain in those areas but equally if you do go onto your back, this will keep your spine correctly aligned.

Two mattresses would I would recommend for you, depending on your budget, would be the Origins Pocket 1500 which has a medium level of comfort and contains a layer of wool and then more man made fibres together with 1500 spunbond pocket springs or the Artisan Naturals would again would provide a medium level of comfort but this mattress contains 85% natural fibres together with calico encased pocket springs.  The spring unit contained within this mattress is one of the best you can use inside a mattress as again it is very breathable.

ORIGINS POCKET 1500

Construction and upholstery layers of the Origins Pocket 1500 mattress

First Layer: 300 gsm Wool: This component is blended with (nominal amount) silk to give the primary layer beneath the fabric a gloriously soft cushion.

Second Layer: 750GSM Very soft Polyester: This coupled with the layers below brings the level of upholstery quite high. However, when compressed through tufting gives these layers a medium comfort but also has sufficient support by use of the springs.

Third Layer: 500GSM Polyester: This is the cushioning layer that acts as the dampener between the insulator layer below and the soft polyester that will follow.

Fourth Layer: One-inch foam insulator: Directly on top of the spring unit we use a one-inch layer of HD foam. This cushions you from the spring unit but also works with you enabling the pocket springs to rise and fall as you move.

The stretch knit mattress side panels are machine stitched. Traditionally hand-tufted. Even though the mattress side panels are 9″ deep, the undulations caused by the abundant upholstery brings the mattress depth to a more realistic 13″.

ARTISAN NATURALS

CONSTRUCTION AND UPHOLSTERY LAYERS OF THE ARTISAN NATURALS MATTRESS

Upholstery Layer 1: Blended British Fleece Wool & Cotton gives a soft yet resilient top comfort layer. With high loft it provides a mix of comfort and light support.

Upholstery Layer 2: A hair proof cambric cover helps stop fibres from migrating between layers & will be found in all high-end mattresses.

Upholstery Layer 3: 1250GSM Rebound Polycotton helps with both support and rebound with this mattress.

Upholstery Layer 4: We used 1500GSM Mohair as the insulating layer to add a robust property to the forthcoming layer.

This has been specifically built to enable us to say “you just cannot get a better-built mattress for this price”. Support from the 1600 Calico Encased Pocket Springs (which are Vanadium coated) can be tweaked softer to firmer to suit your own individual bodyweight or indeed have half firm and half medium as required and at no additional charge with our split tension offering.

The internal upholstery is amongst the best you can get for this price range and all this combined ensure that this mattress will be exceptionally hard to beat for build, comfort and more importantly, price.

If you require any further information or advice, please do not hesitate to call the Office where one of our friendly team will be able to assist you further.

Kind regards Julie
