Hi Gents, What a brilliant website, I have bookmarked it for the missus to read. We urgently need your advice on a couple of double mattresses, especially as I've just been diagnosed with a prolapsed disc!

We've been looking at Highgate Beds Healthopaedic Merino 3000 (around £540) and the Harrison Visco Superb 2000 (£750) - both pocket springed with a top layer of foam. We tried the Merino 3000 for 10-15 mins in the shop and thought it was really comfy. Can't say for sure how effective the top layer of Merino wool and memory foam was, but it seemed to conform and support my back well - not too firm, not too saggy, good around the edges. We were due to purchase it and then we tried the Harrison Visco Superb (also with a top memory layer) in another shop, which felt great, but just a bit too pricey. We told the salesman about the Merino 3000 and he described it as "a mug's eyeful". Any thoughts about either mattress?

Hi Simon.

Thank you for your question.

I am not familiar with The Harrison's Visco Superb 2000 at all and I wonder if you saw this model in an outlet that has this particular model made exclusively for them to avoid you doing any kind of price comparison.

The starter model for Harrisons Memory Tailor Range is The Expression 3000 and it maybe worth looking at that particular model as a comparison to The Visco Superb.

However, on Harrison's specification it states that the [Expression 3000] mattress contains 3000 mattress spring count and yet on a retailers site it states that the mattress has 2000 springs in the mattress and 1000 in the base!

Perhaps if 2000 The Visco Superb might be the same mattress under a different name - worth checking!

As for Highgate's Merino 3000 the basic build is 2 inches of memory foam on top of 1 inch Reflex foam.  A fairly basic construction and quite easy to compare with the myriad of other memory foam mattresses out there.  The Merino wool [and silk] is in the cover and not a component.

If the salesman is promoting this aspect as a benefit I would ask him what percentage of the fabric is Merino Wool - my cynical guess would be about 20%.

As a sidenote the fabric used on any mattress should be the very last clincher on your decision.

For roughly the budget you are looking at in comparison to Harrison's Expression Memory Foam you can get a really good quality traditional built mattress such as our Origins Pocket 1500 which is the most popular mattress that we sell and is very good value for money.   Could you please contact our office so that we can take further information from you if you are interested in any of our products.
