Rarely used bed has what appears to be black dust between the mattress and woollen underlay. Since we are in our eighties we would appreciate a simple way to get rid of it. Thank you.

Hi Janet,

Thank you for contacting us with regard to the problem you seem to have with your mattress.   Having mould on a mattress is quite serious from a health point of view so lets see if we are able to assist you in sorting this out.

Stack of cheap thin mattresses

Mould growth is predominantly caused by humid environments, sweat moisture or stains. As the human body perspires during sleep to cool down, plus other contributing factors, you can understand how mould can grow.

If your mattress develop mould, then it can be removed by following the mattress maintenance steps below.

  • You would first need to vacuum both sides of the mattress thoroughly. Even on a non-turnable mattress, it’s advisable to thoroughly vacuum both sides. Once you have done this ensure that you fully empty your vacuum in order to prevent any further spread of the mould.
  • Using warm soapy water, deploy a circular motion to clean the affected area with a damp cloth. Ensure that you don’t soak the cloth that you’re using as this will only exacerbate the situation by adding further moisture to the area.
  • Once this is done, allow as much air to the mattress as you can in order to let it dry and ventilate. The ideal way to do this is to allow direct sunlight to the mattress. If this can’t be done, just allow as much air as possible to it.

However if your mattress has developed a serious mould problem, the only way to eradicate this would be to change the mattress unfortunately which is a costly business.   However should you require a new mattress, please contact our friendly team who will be able to assist you with this purchase on 0161 437 4419.

Kind regards Julie
