Mattress recommendation

Richard Wood

Hi John & Ryan,
We are looking for a new mattress, budget upto around £1k or maybe more for the perfect one.
Our current mattresses and preferences:-
Richard (me): 6'5" tall, 17 stone weight, 100% side sleeper, prefer medium.
Patricia: 5" tall, under 9 st weight, side and back sleeper, prefers (very) firm.
We've just moved in together and have both our beds so I can tell you what mattresses we've been sleeping on for a few years.
For me, it is a Sleepmasters Sensaform 2400 (king size)
For her, it is a "Elegant Option - The Hand Built Bed Company - 1800 - firmer springing" (double)
Both of us find the Sleepmasters too hot, also when I bought it, the memory foam lasted about 6 months before it died and became normal foam.
I find Patricias Elegant Option far too hard, on occasion after sleeping in it I wake up with a painful and stiff shoulder or knee. Patricia finds my Sleepmaster far too soft and just cannot get a good nights sleep in it.
We've put boards under Patricias side of the Sleepmaster (it's on a slatted base) which has helped slightly but no where enough.
Talking about it, Patricia says she thinks she likes the top (comfort layer?) to be "firm" as opposed to the core of the mattress being very firm.
Saying that I'm sure that the fact the Sleepmasters is so damn hot is a big part of the problem. From spring to autum we can sleep with a single sheet, and at the moment we've got a middle of summer (tog 4.5) mattress on which usually gets thrown off by me.
I know you do the mattresses that can have medium / firm or soft / medium split.
Looking at all the choices out there, I'm overloaded with information and baffled!
What would be our ideal mattress? It's for a king size bed.
Many thanks,
Richard

Hi Richard,

It appears from what you say that you have both ruled out the other's choice for a variety of reasons leaving you in a position of limbo.

I note that there is a weight differential, which is somewhat compensated for by your height meaning that for both of you, a medium spring tension would be suitable. This would provide a firm feel for your partner whilst providing the medium feel you require. It is clear that you need to move away from memory foam and any product which retains heat.

Please view the details of our Artisan range and in particular the Artisan Naturals which will give you both a medium overall comfort from the upholstery layers and with a medium spring tension will give you the correct support but with a slightly firmer support for your partner.   If the mattress is to go on to either a slatted or solid base, this will again firm the spring tension up.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
