A customer asked

We are looking to change from a king size to a super King size, our current mattress is a Dorlux Melbourne, it is comfortable but now quite old. We have been looking round and have the following on our short list so far - silent night mirapocket ultimate, silent night diamond collection 1400, Sealy teramo, Sealy Napoli and Hypnos ortho 10 and Hypnos silk, what do you recommend? We are mainly side sleepers, I am 10st 7 my husband is 11st 5. Any help much appreciated. Thanks

Hi there,

I note from your short list that you are looking at several types and styles of mattresses, however, from the descriptions published in respect of each, that is all I can confirm. The difficulty is that none of the products referred to have full unfettered confirmation of the levels of upholstery used in terms of GSM (grams per square metre) and this makes any form of comparison or provision of an opinion as to quality and performance impossible.

What I would say is that with your body weights, you ought to be looking at a mattress with a medium spring tension and then as far as upholstery is concerned, it depends upon what type of feel you prefer. It is wrong to assume that spring tension is the same as feel. Spring tension is what is required to give particular body weights the appropriate support. Feel is the effect required from the upholstery layers, such as sinking in, enveloping etc.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

How much to spend on a double mattress? What can I expect for my money?
Under £500 Will not get you much at best a 13.5 gauge open coil/cage sprung with a thin polyester layer or a solid foam mattress.
£500 Entry level spunbond springs with some form of synthetic upholstery. Usually one sided mattresses.
£750 The beginnings of a basic pocket springs unit with 800 – 1000 count. No substantial amount of filling other than foams and synthetic materials. Two sided models.
£1000 Should get you away from most low ranges and into the mid-range pocket spring models.
£1250 Should get you a decent pocket sprung mattress with some Natural Fibre content.
£1500 Should get you many manufacturers mid-range models with Natural Fibres
£1500-£2000 Should get you a Hand Made primarily Natural Fibre Quality Mattress
£2000+ You should expect 100% Natural Fibres and Traditional Hand Made Construction Method.
£5000+ A Bespoke Hand Made Sleep System, High-end Spring Units & Featuring the Worlds Most Luxurious Natural Fibres.

Because you have viewed several different mattresses, which will provide completely different feels, it is not possible at this stage to suggest an appropriate model from our ranges. If you would like to call our office to confirm the preferred feel, you could then obtain specific advice as to the suitability of one of our products for you. I am sorry if this response appears a little negative, but until other manufacturers are prepared to fully disclose construction and upholstery specifics in detail, there is little more advice I can provide.

I hope this assists and look forward to speaking to you personally on 0161 437 4419.

Kind regards Julie
