Mattress settlement and body shape

Hello I'm coming to you for a non-connected response on this as youre not the company we purchased from. Im not experienced in new mattresses so im coming to you to learn more please!

We have a Silent Night 2.0 Premier Inn mattress that is king size, medium Firm with a Geltex filling (7 layers pillow top, geltex, memory, eternity layer, fabric layer, zoned pockets and fabric casting) and I wanted to know how long it's supposed to take before you can tell you've slept on a mattress?

I have read a bit about mattress settlement and it moulding to your body over time but how quickly should we expect to see a "dent"?

We've had a replacement delivered and slept on it for 3 nights, the dents were bck after night 1 and already and quite obvious. I dont want to end up sleeping in troughs if these dents continue to grow and potentially won't even out as we cant sleep everywhere on the bed like cats!

I know that hotels often have changeable toppers but even after a week in a hotel recently, on a mattress I dont know the spec of, there were no dents and that felt just as good every night. So have we brought the wrong spec or a bad quality mattress?

Thanks for your time and help.

Hi Jo,

We appreciate you reaching out to us about the concerns you're experiencing with your new mattress.

Mattress settling and the formation of body impressions can be a significant issue with new mattresses, leading to discomfort and disrupted sleep. While it’s normal for all mattresses to settle to some extent, there are proactive measures you can take to minimize sagging and maintain a comfortable sleep surface. Softer mattresses and those with a pillowtop are particularly susceptible to these changes, so it’s essential to take action early.

It is during the compression of these comfort layers that mattresses can develop dips and sags, a phenomenon known as mattress settlement. In high-quality mattresses, these layers are typically made from natural fibres, which provide better durability and comfort. Conversely, more affordable entry-level models may utilize materials like polyester or foam, which can lead to quicker compression over time. Regardless of the materials used, all comfort layers will begin to settle as they adapt to your sleeping position after the first night of sleeping on it.   Mattress settlement refers to the process where the materials inside a mattress compress and conform to your body over time. Since you typically sleep in the same area each night, this settling happens more quickly in that specific spot compared to the rest of the mattress. It's similar to sitting on one side of a sofa; when you finally try the other side, it may feel more supportive so it is vital that you ensure that you utilise the whole of the sleeping surface.   You don't have to sleep on the entire surface but if you are having a lie in, watching TV or reading a book, do this in the middle of the mattress so that those upholstery layers settle along with the sleeping areas.

Some customers who have a larger sized mattress such as kingsize of superking can notice a ridge down the centre of the mattress which then makes the sleeping areas look as though they dipped considerably.   It occurs because the centre of the bed tends to receive minimal use, which allows it to maintain its original, uncompressed state, while the edges compress slightly over time. Human nature leads us to develop sleeping habits, often favouring the same position night after night, causing the areas we frequently use to wear down more than the centre.

I hope this assists however please do not hesitate to contact us if we can be of more assistance to you.

Kind regards Julie Collier
