Mattress suitable for a sleeper with Sciatica
Ive had sciatica now since September (well they think it's sciatica waiting on a MRI) and sleep is terrible, after 4 hours I'm awake in pain, normally i could sleep on a rock and not feel uncomfortable and sleep for 8 hours. I'm currently sleeping on a japanese futon that I love and never had any problems with. But everyone i know is saying maybe that is the reason I'm not sleeping because I'm getting old and need a proper bed. So im 38 male my hight is 5, 7 and I weight 78.2kg and I normally sleep on my front and trying to sleep on my back more because its meant to be better for your back and I'm also not sharing a bed with anyone at the moment. So I was hoping you would be able to give me some advice on a good advice on what type of mattresses would help me with a better sleep.
Hi Andy,
Thank you for contacting us regarding a new mattress which will help to relieve the pain that you are suffering at the moment.
It used to be recommended that people who suffered from a bad back required a mattress which was orthopedic firm however the advice now is that you need to receive the correct level of support. The support is provided by the internal spring unit and is based on body weight and height. You also need to have the correct level of comfort which is provided by the top upholstery layers.
Another recommendation suggests that someone who is suffering from back problems should receive a firm spring tension however as mentioned above, mattress springs are designed to work for specific body weights and therefore you should always receive the spring tension which is designed for your weight. A firm spring for body weights under 17.5st may not offer any support at all as it is too firm.
Bodyweight | Spring tension |
---|---|
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg | Medium (1.4mm) |
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards | Firm (1.6mm) |
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) | Soft (1.2mm) |
As you are a tummy sleeper, we would always recommend a comfort level that is slightly firmer to that of a medium so that your tummy does not sink into those top layers too much causing an un natural arch in your back. However as you are used to a futon style mattress which is extremely firm from both a comfort and support point of view, the firmest mattress that we make is the Artisan Bespoke. This mattress contains 100% natural fibres together with calico encased pocket springs which are again very breathable.
As you seem to be suffering from Sciatica but are unsure until you have received the results of your MRI scan, it may be better to wait until you have the results of the scan before we proceed to recommending a mattress for you. In the meantime you could try adding a mattress topper to your existing mattress which will provide another level of comfort for you. This could assist whilst you are awaiting the results of the MRI scan.
Once the results have been received, please contact one of our friendly team who will be able to assist you further with your mattress recommendation on 0161 437 4419.
Regards Julie
