Mattress with centre dip, are the slats too far apart?

A customer asked

Hi,
I have a wooden spring slat bed frame around ten years old, the sprung slats are just under seven cms apart, my mattress of the same age is suffering from the centre dip.
I notice that the slats on the side that I sleep are flatter than the side that is not slept on ( it's just 8 stone me in this bed).
Would it be enough for me to do the 6cms MDF boarding and put a new mattress on the top?
kindest regards

Hi Ceby,

Thank you for your question.

When placing a mattress on a slatted base you must ensure the gaps between the slats do not exceed 3". Gaps that are larger cause the mattress to sink between the slats which causes problems within your mattress. Also you may have heard of ‘the humpback bridge’ effect where the mattress develops a central dip due to this.  This is where the pressure from the arch is too firm for the mattress.

To resolve these problems we advise that you board over the base with either MDF of Plywood essentially turning your base into a platform top. The thickness of MDF I would suggest should be 2-3mm placed over the whole area of the slats to provide a uniform surface upon which the mattress can sit. It will make any mattress feel slightly firmer than it would without the boarding and should prevent a new mattress suffering with the same issue as your current one.

This image shows three lengths of MDF sheets bridging the arched slats and central bar to prevent the central dipping problems. They are also not so big as to prevent any problems with aeration to the mattress.

If you are considering a new pocket sprung mattress please take a look at our Origins range and our Artisan range.

I hope this helps but if you should need any further information or if you would like to discuss the suitability of our mattresses please do not hesitate to give the office a call on 0161 437 4419 to speak to our friendly team of advisors.

Kind regards,
Amy
