Hello,

we are a young couple searching for a new mattress for our flat and searching around the internet we found your beautiful site full of interesting instructions, and we would like to thank you for that, it helped a lot!

In the last three years we used a cheap king foam mattress that was already in the flat, but it doesn't work for us anymore. In the last year I started to overheat in the middle of the night and wake up without be able to sleep again and my partner had already back problems from before so we are trying to find a solutions that fits both of us.

I'm 176cm/76 kg and she is 160cm/57 kg, we sleep mainly on the back but sometimes also on the sides.

What would you suggest for us?

Hi Riccardo,

Many thanks for your kind words about our mattress advice website and how much it has helped you! We're sorry to hear you're struggling to sleep on your foam mattress and can certainly offer some advice to assist.

The problem with all foam mattresses, in particular memory foam, is that they retain heat. Vasco elastic foams such as memory and other 'pressure-relieving' mattress foams actually require heat to mould so retain it and this is what makes them soft. It also means they are incredibly slow to return to their original shape when you need to turn over. This in turn  can also lead to awkward uncomfortable sleeping positions which can cause or contribute to poor posture. This is maybe why you are struggling to sleep.

With your partners back issues this foam certainly won't be helping her sleep soundly as foam mattresses offer the most basic of supports for sleepers.

Ideally what you need are fibres that are more breathable and responsive in the top 'comfort layer' of the mattress. This is also known as the mattress upholstery. You then need a pocket spring support unit that fits your weight ranges, looking at your bodyweights you both need a 1.4 medium gauge pocket springs. These pocket springs are specifically made for weight ranges and don't have much bearing on the overall feel of the mattress. The feel is provided by the upholstery comfort layers on top of this support.

We have two mattress options depending on your budget which should b far better in helping you get a good nights sleep. Both are a medium feel in the upholstery layer with deep fillings, perfect for either a back or side sleeper.

1.Origins Pocket 1500 Mattress

The Origins Pocket 1500 is our best selling 'entry' level mattress. It features primarily synthetic fillings but with a top wool comfort layer. This will be far more breathable than your foam mattress. It's two sided meaning you can and should use both sides, alternating each month. This will far outlive a cheap memory foam one sided mattress. There’s some more detail below about the mattress.

Origins Pocket 1500 Mattress
1: 300GSM WOOL
2: 750GSM VERY SOFT POLYESTER
3: 500GSM POLYESTER PAD
4: ONE INCH FOAM INSULATOR LAYER
5: 1500 SPUN BOND POCKET SPRINGS
TOTAL 1550GSM
DEPTH 30-33CM

2. Artisan Naturals Mattress

The second mattress is our best selling natural fibre model and is the Artisan Naturals. It features a calico encased vanadium coated pocket spring, the same as Vispring use and has 85% natural fibre fillings. Meaning its one of the coolest mattresses available. These fibres are highly responsive and breathable.

It also has a forgiving top comfort layer. We would recommend you look at the medium 1.4 gauge calico spring for your bodyweight.

Artisan Naturals Mattress
1: 1200GSM BLENDED BRITISH FLEECE WOOL AND COTTON
2: HAIRPROOF CAMBRIC COVER
3: 1250GSM REBOUND POLY COTTON
4: 1500GSM 100% PURE MOHAIR
5: 1600 CALICO ENCASED POCKET SPRINGS [49MM ] [1.28MM ]
TOTAL: 3950GSM
DEPTH:: 27-30CM
CHEMICAL FREE COVER

Both of these mattresses are suitable with any base and you can read more on mattress bases here. If you have a slatted base we do advise you board over with some plywood or MDF to avoid the mattress being damaged by excessive gaps between the slats.

We hope that helps and gives you further mattress buying guidance. If you have any more mattress related questions please get back in touch on info@localhost or 0161 437 4419.

Sleep well
John & Ryan
