Number of pocket springs?

Jayne

I need to purchase a new small double mattress to go onto a slatted bedstead ( I have taken note of your recommendation to use a 3-6mm chipboard/pegboard) it is just for my use and I am 5.6" tall & weigh about 14 stone.

I'm ashamed to say my current mattress is about 24 years old & is an orthopaedic type firm mattress although this was not purchased due to any back or muscular pains - after this length of time on a firm mattress, I think my body would object to anything softer.

However, I am intrigued by your latex toppers and wondered whether an Origins 1000 with a separate latex topper would be of sufficient firmness or whether a Origins 1500 + topper would be more suitable? Does the number of pocket springs make a difference to a bed?

Any other suggestions - budget of about £800.

Brilliant website by the way !!!

Hi Jayne,

Thank you for your enquiry and the compliment in respect of our site.

First off pocket spring counts are used as a source of marketing for most retailers. A decent springs/" title="pocket spring">pocket spring count between 1000-2000 is the best figure to place your decision on. More on why higher springs counts are misleading on the video below!

Whilst we appreciate that you have been using a firm mattress for years, this is not the correct tension for your body weight, a medium tension/feel mattress is more appropriate.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

The Origins Pocket 1500 has a standard medium tension spring unit together with man made upholstery providing an overall medium feel. Boarding your current slatted base will also make this mattress feel ever so slightly firmer, which may suit.

Mattress toppers are used primarily to provide an extra comfort layer and to soften the feel of a mattress, which may be feeling too firm. A mattress topper cannot be used to make a mattress feel firmer. If you do want to use a topper, we would always advocate using similar materials to the upholstery in the mattress, so if you have natural upholstery, you should look at naturally filled toppers.

Whilst you can use our latex toppers with mattresses of a different construction, they are made primarily to accompany our 100% Natural Latex mattresses.

We trust that this helps, but if you require any further advice or guidance, please call our office on 0161 437 4419 and speak with one of our advisors.

Kind Regards Gary
