Origins 2000 mattress questions
Hi John, I’m very interested in the Origins 2000, but have heard that too many pocket springs can be a disadvantage in terms of durability due to their smaller relative size meaning that they are more susceptible to becoming damaged or wearing out more quickly. Can you give your opinion on this?
I’m very grateful for your clear and no-nonsense approach to selling mattresses!
I just wonder if I’d be better off with an equivalent grade mattress with a lower spring count (such as the Origins 1500) as I really don’t want to have to buy another mattress 5 years down the line because of spring failure!
Many thanks, Luke

Hi P van Weede
Thank you for your enquiry on our website. I have looked at the mattresses you have mentioned and unfortunately without a detailed specification on the amount (GSM grams per square meter) of natural fillings within these mattresses it is impossible to give you an accurate comparison to any of the models in our Artisan range. I can see from looking at these mattresses that you prefer a medium in the comfort layers. We have six models in this range that are classed medium with slight variances. The softest is the Artisan Bespoke 003 and the firmest is the Artisan 1500 and the true medium is the Artisan Naturals.
Spring tension is based solely on an individuals body weight. Your husband requires a medium spring tension to give him the correct level of support whereas you would technically be classed as requiring a soft spring. Personally, I would say you are borderline between the two and as you say you find the soft spring tension too soft there is no reason you can not have the firmer support from the medium spring tension.
Spring Tension | Wire diameter (Gauge) | Weight Range |
---|---|---|
Soft | 1.2mm | Bespoke Tension (Please Call) |
Medium | 1.4mm | Upto 16 stone |
Firm | 1.6mm | 16 stone plus |
Extra Firm / Orthopaedic | 1.9mm | 20 stone plus |
The Artisan base has two options. The Bonnel coil and the pocket sprung base and the difference is that the Bonnel coil is a continuous coil spring with springs added, similar to the spring system in older mattresses whereas the pocket springs are individually pocketed springs within a wooden frame for a ‘true edge’. They both do exactly the same in supporting the mattress but the Bonnel coil is cheaper. Sprung edge divans will soften the overall feel of a mattress slightly, being more forgiving.
