Origins Comfort 1000 or Origins Pocket 1500?

Sam

Hello. I’m after a new mattress to put on my platform base, as the mattress I bought several years ago for a bad back (quite a firm bed) has now become rock solid in feel to me. I can’t see any noticeable indentations, but I assume the filling has flattened and, as a side sleeper, I now feel like I’m sleeping on a plank and am waking up with an aching back and shoulders most mornings. Reading through one of the earlier questions, I came to the conclusion that for a softer feel mattress – keeping hold of my platform base – the Origins Comfort 1000 might be a good choice for me, however, I like the sound of the wool upper layer on the Origins 1500. I weight about 9 stone and feel like I would like the softest mattress possible. Would you recommend the Origins Comfort 1000 or the 1500 for me please? If I got the 1000, I could put a wool topper on it, if necessary.

Hi Sam,

In the past medical advice for people suffering with back pain was for them to opt for a firm mattress. This advice has recently been found to be incorrect (read here) http://www.chiropractic-uk.co.uk/time-to-change-your-mattress-244-news.aspx. What is required is support from the spring unit and comfort from the upholstery layers. With your particular body weight, we would never have recommended a firm mattress.

Spring Tension Wire diameter (Gauge) Weight Range
Soft 1.2mm Bespoke Tension (Please Call)
Medium 1.4mm Upto 16 stone
Firm 1.6mm 16 stone plus
Extra Firm / Orthopaedic 1.9mm 20 stone plus

The Origins Pocket 1500, whilst providing a medium support in the spring tension it also a medium in the comfort layers, which is softer than you are used to.  Whereas the Origins Comfort 1000 is likely to provide too soft a feel particularly when moving from a previous firm mattress.  A topper will soften the feel of a mattress but for the first few weeks we would recommend not using one whilst you get a true feel for the mattress.  It can take 4 to 6 weeks for your body to readjust to a new mattress.

I trust that this is of assistance to you and if you require any further guidance or advice, please call our office on 0161 437 4419.  Our office hours are 8 am - 8 pm Monday to Friday and 10 am - 4 pm Saturday and Sunday.

Kind Regards
