Pins and Needles

Hi we purchased a new king-sized mattress 3 years ago. Preferring a firmer feel at the time, now regretting it. It is branded from a local bed store but it appears to be an Enchanted House Ortho Extra Firm. I can't find out its build, but seem to recall 1000 springs and wool and cotton, it's branded as a Ortho and says Extra firm.

I weigh 110kg and my wife is about 65kg.

Trouble is it's hurting my wife's hips without a topper on it, but then it's too warm, we both sleep warm. I am getting dead arms/pins and needles a lot during the night and my shoulders hurt. I suspect all of this is down to the mattress so I need to find a solution.

What would you recommend? needs to be more medium firm I suspect, I don't like super soft beds and nor does my wife. However she has wide and quiet bony hips. Wife sleeps on her side, I am mostly side sleeper but to revert to my back at times.

Hi Dan,

Thank you for your question. If the comfort layers of your Enchanted House mattress only contain wool and cotton, in that case you have a soft mattress with extra firm support, as the upholstery layers dictate how the mattress feels and the spring tension provides the level of support. Wool and cotton are some of the softest fibres used in mattresses.

Upholstery Layer Fibre Type How it will feel?
Polyester Synthetic Soft
White Fibre Synthetic Soft/Medium
Recycled Fibre / Eco Fibre Synthetic Medium
Memory Foam Synthetic Medium/Firm
Igel / Hybrid Foam Synthetic Medium/Firm
Polycotton Synthetic/Natural Blend Soft/Medium
Linen Synthetic/Natural Blend Medium
Wool (Pure) Natural Soft/Medium
Cotton (Pure) Natural Soft
Silk Natural Soft
Horsehair Natural Medium
Mohair Natural Medium/Firm
Hemp Natural Medium
Latex (100% Natural) Natural Medium/Firm
Coir Natural Firm
Flax Natural Firm
Coarse Cashmere Natural Firm
Bamboo Natural Super Soft
Horsetail Natural Firm
Alpaca Natural Soft
Cashmere (Pure) Natural Soft
Vicuna Natural Super Soft

At the body weights you have provided, we would pair you with the firm spring tension and your wife with the medium spring tension to provide you both with the correct level of support. As you do not weigh enough to activate the extra firm Ortho springs, you need to weigh at least 20 stone, the springs are not moving with you, and you essentially have a tabletop of wire with some soft upholstery layers on top. The upholstery layers will be compressed between you and the springs that do not move, which is causing pressure pains in your shoulders and your wife's hips and causing the pins and needles you are experiencing.

When we were in email contact in 2022, we discussed the Origins Pocket 1500/2000 zip and link mattress and the Artisan Naturals with a dual spring tension. Both mattresses have a medium level of comfort in the upholstery layers, which means there is cushioning in the top layer for your shoulders and hips to sink into when sleeping on your side, but they have more supportive layers underneath so that you will not sink in too much when sleeping on your back. Given that you are both warm sleepers, I would recommend the Artisan Naturals. Natural fibres provide a cooler sleep surface and help you to regulate your body temperature. They are also more durable, which means the lifespan of the mattress will be longer. We can make the Artisan range of mattresses with a dual spring tension in a one piece mattress, whereas with the Origins range, we can only make a dual spring tension in a zip and link mattress.

I hope this helps, and if you would like any further information, please do not hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards

Michaela
