portable mattress

John Walls

Good morning
I have a chronic back injury that is greatly relieved by a very firm mattress (a Harrison Topaz). I am virtually unable to travel from home because most mattresses are just not supportive enough and I cannot physically transport something with the weight and bulk of the Harrison, though we have tried!
Do you think there is any way at all the essential features of a heavy pocket sprung mattress could be replicated in a single mattress that was light and slim enough to take on holiday by car?
Some thoughts and questions.
We have a roof rack in place so can transport it flat though a roll up or folding mattress would be even better.
Occasional use on the floor - no base needed.
I do not get on with foam mattresses, futons or lilos but thought layers of foam/short springs/air might work
I currently use 2 Thermarest Luxury self inflating camping mats and a foam mat strapped together - it helps that we can increase firmness by adding air but it is still not supportive enough.
I wondered if any layers could be detachable (using velcro?) to break down the load for ease of carrying and packing.
Could you use carbon fibre springs to reduce weight?
Could you achieve the right support using only micro springs?
Finding the right solution would make a huge difference to my quality of life and I would expect to pay a fair bit for a comfortable night away if you thought this was something that could be constructed. I have come across other people with the same problem online and the only suggestion seems to be foam mattresses for caravans, boats etc
Many thanks

Hi John,

Thank you for your question.

It is very difficult to suggest a product which suits all of your requirements, mainly because you want something which is portable and able to offer the firm support. With latex and hybrid foams, the firmness provided is affected by the thickness of the product and obviously the thicker it is the less portable it is. The same applies to pocket sprung upholstered products. We do not make any products which have detachable/removable components. Having said that, a piece of Reflex foam around 15cm thick may well provide the firmness you are looking for.

What you require may need some specialist input and it may be that a manufacturer of caravan/boat seating or mattresses may be your best bet, but I am not able to make a recommendation in that regard.

I am sorry I cannot assist you further but wish you luck in your search.

Kind regards Julie
