A customer asked

Hi, I'm having a terrible time trying to find a mattress so reassured to see I'm not the only person who finds it difficult!

Currently waiting for a tempur to be returned as I've never been so uncomfortable and haven't slept for a week, it's like sleeping on the floor for almost £1k!

Prior to that I've had an old Warren Evans pocket sprung which was fine when I was in my twenties but my needs have developed over a decade, and it was sagging considerably. I'm 38, 8st 7 and 5'4" so quite slim. I sleep on my side and have found the Tempur so hard that it's causing pressure on my ribs and hips and making my back hurt. I suffer from back pain anyway, mainly in neck/shoulders/thoracic spine and what I need is a mattress to be very supportive, so that my spine is kept straight, but with a very soft top layer so I sink into it, the shoulder I'm lying on is not squashed and I don't feel any pressure. I've tried numerous mattresses within my budget range (up to £1,000) at John Lewis and Warren Evans and the only one I have liked is the JL natural collection 5000 spring Egyptian cotton, but I'm not totally blown away by it, and was worried that the medium tension might start to sag. I don't have time to become a mattress expert by reading everything on this site, so if you could recommend one to me that would be great!

Thanks. >

Hi There,
Thank you for getting in touch.
We have two different ranges of pocket sprung mattresses, The Origins range is synthetic fibres and The Artisan range is natural fibres.
The Origins comfort 1000 is the softest of the Origins range. The Comfort 1000 is supportive to a level at what we would class as a ‘true medium’ based on an average body weight. Not too firm and not too soft. Saying that, this is the softest mattress we do using different densities of polyester in the comfort layer. To build softer at this price could only mean a reduction in fillings. We believe that you will not be able to find a better built and finished mattress for same or less than this.

John Ryan By Design Origins Comfort
1 750gsm Very Soft Polyester
2 500gsm Polyester Pad
3 One Inch Foam Insulator Layer
4 1000 Spun Bond Pocket Springs

The Artisan Luxury is the softest model in the Artisan range. This is one of the best completely 100% natural component arrangements you can possibly get. Substantially well upholstered (4600 GSM) utilising horsehair and Wool in a sandwich layout topped off with a blended wool and cotton primary layer.

John Ryan By Design Artisan Luxury Vi-Spring Devonshire
1 1200 GSM British Fleece Wool and Cotton 600gsm British Fleece Wool
2 Hairproof Cambric Cover 1700gsm Devonshire Fleece Wool
3 1200gsm Pure Horsehair NA
4 500gsm Pure Wool NA
5 1200gsm Pure Horsetail NA
6 500gsm Pure Wool 300gsm Bonded British Fleece Wool and Cotton
7 1476 Calico encased Pocket Springs [51mm] [1.42mm] 1326 Calico encased Pocket Springs [54mm] [1.52mm]
Total GSM 4600gsm 2600gsm

The models in the Artisan range can be paired with either a soft, medium or a firm spring tension for support, the correct spring tension is determined by the body weight of the individual sleeping on the mattress.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

At 8 stone you will need to have a soft spring tension to support your body weight.
To discuss the suitability of our products further please contact the office on 0161 437 4419 to speak to one of our friendly advisors.
Kind regards,
Amy.
