Replacing Dunlopillo latex mattress

A customer asked

Hello I would like some advice on what kind of mattress to buy. For the past 25 years I have slept very well on a Dunlopillo mattress - my parents always bought these and so I am not used to sprung mattresses at all. Sadly I have just parted from my husband who has taken the bed with him and so for the first time I am looking for a replacement. I don't think that I can afford a new Dunlopillo and I have also read that their quality has deteriorated so am wary of spending a lot of money unnecessarily. I have bought a sprung slatted bedstead from M&S but am now researching mattresses. My budget is around £500/600. What would you recommend given that I am used to a solid latex mattress?

Many thanks Susan .

Hi Susan,

Thanks for your question.

I'm afraid there will be nothing to compare to your old Dunlopillo and the closest we would be able to supply to fit in with your budget will be our Origins Latex 1500.

Our Origins Pocket Latex 1500 is a traditional pocket sprung mattress constructed with an in-built latex top layer.

John Ryan By Design Origins Latex
1 300 gsm Wool Silk blend pad
2 3cm Talalay Latex (60/40% blend) 70kg Density
3 3cm Talalay Latex (60/40% blend) 70kg Density
4 One inch HD Foam
5 1500 Spun Bond Pocket Springs

That latex layer paired with the spring unit gives the mattress a firmer overall feel having no sink into that top layer.

We would need to know your body weights and sleeping habits to discuss suitability as for instance, side sleepers should be avoiding anything too firm in the top layers.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

Please note that in regards to your base you will need to measure the gaps between the slats. If you find that the gaps are bigger than 3" then you will need to board the base with MDF, plywood or pegboard to solidify the surface and protect the mattress from indentation and damage. Please see the article here for further information on slatted bed bases.

I hope this has answered your questions fully but if you do have any further queries please don't hesitate to contact our office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards, Lee.
