Replacing summer winter side mattress

A customer asked

Hi John & Ryan, Having looked at your website you seem to be the guru of beds so we're hoping you can help us out. We have just bought a new bedstead and so need a new mattress. Our previous mattress was a 1400 spring Wyespring Dr. Luxury regular support (with a summer and winter side) which was a little too soft on our beech sprung bed stead but seems fine now that we have moved it to a solid slatted based. So now we are looking for a mattress that will give the same feel on a beech sprung base. Having tried out some mattresses it seems that Firm is the way to go but your site suggests that we should move to medium as my wife is 9 stone and I am 14.5 stone. So my question is which beds from your range will give the same feel on a beech sprung slatted base that we get from our other mattress on a solid slatted base?

Thanks and looking forward to your reply which we are hoping will end our search for a mattress!

Hi Stuart and Adele.

This is an impossible question to answer. No one mattress will feel the same to different people of varying body weights.

There is no way on earth that Adele at 9 stone is experiencing the same tension as you at 14.5 stone. When selecting your mattress you have to consider it in two parts.

1. The Spring Support and 2. The Comfort Layers (Upholstery).

Adele's priority will be mainly for adequate upholstery as her bodyweight is too light to require the same support as you will. You, on the other hand, do require more support than Adele - you are over 5 stones heavier. But, you do not want to rely on springs alone, so there has to again be adequate upholstery to cushion you. It now boils down to what spring units are available to suit you both.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

Mass produced pocket springs in the bulk of all mattresses come in one spring tension (usually a medium), which means there is no option to tailor the mattress to suit you both - It's a compromise for price. If this means it is too firm for Adele then you will have to add supplementary comfort layers to cushion her light frame. Pocket springs that do have the option of different gauges - generally Soft, Medium or Firm - usually come at a price, but it means that you both will obtain the correct support for your own individual body weights.

Calico soft mattress spring

Calico encased pocket springs are found in the ultimate mattresses (Vi-Spring and Savoir Beds for example), Springs in a calico material are entirely forgiving and offer the precise support your bodyweight requires, obviously, the gauge will be relevant to your bodyweight.  These can also be dual sprung which means the mattress can be tailored to precisely suit you both. However, these do come in at a price. In your case, you really do have to give yourself a realistic budget. Without this, there is no way that you will be able to decide on a mattress and understand the compromises that may have to be made.
