A customer asked

I want to purchase a pocket memory foam mattress, I like a mattress from Bensons for beds called Memory pocket 1050 roll up mattress. It seems to tick all the boxes in the way of comfort, I sleep on my side and suffer a bit with back problems. It has a level 3 firmness rating. The price is £295 this is the one suggested for my requirements, but is it just personnel preference for a bed? I just don't want to b buying another mattress in a few years time? There seems to be cheaper mattresses on eBay and online sites but I hope this one is right. It will be out onto a slatted base. I appreciate any comments

Hi Jenny,

Thank you for your questions.

We do not make any solid Memory Foam mattresses due to their issues with heat retention and shorter lifespan compared to a Pocket Spring two-sided mattresses. Having said that, such mattresses do suit some individuals and as you say it is a matter of personal preference.

I am unable to comment with regard to the firmness rating applied by Bensons being suitable for you as I do not know your body weight and do not know how they calculate such ratings. I would say that bargains very rarely turn out to be so and would avoid any purchases on Ebay. Likewise, the old maxim "you get what you pay for" applies and the mattress from Bensons does seem quite inexpensive, which would make me personally question the quality and performance.

You would need to see the data sheet to fully know the firmness like the one below. More often than not retails won't disclose this to you.

Foam Grade Density Min KG/M3 Density Max KG/M3 Hardness Min (n) Hardness Max (n)
Vasco 40kg 38 42 40 60
Vasco 60kg 58 62 70 100
Laygel 60kg 57 63 100 150
Coolblue 70kg 65 70 70 100
Reflex 300 30 32 100 130
Reflex 300F 30 32 130 160

It may feel right in the store, but the time spent trying a mattress in store is no substitute for the 6 - 8 hours per night that you spend on a mattress. If you want to know how to choose a mattress we have a guide here to help you.

I would not suggest placing a foam mattress on top of a slatted base as this can cause the mattress to conform to the gaps between the slats and cause problems with your mattress. It may be best that you board over the slats using a 3-5mm piece of MDF or Plywood.

If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind regards,
John
