Softening a Mattress Tension

Does a mattress which has been stored in a warehouse take time to settle to the tension it is supposed to be sold as? I have purchased a Happy Beds Majestic 1000 pocket sprung mattress and it is rock hard to the point I cannot sleep on it. The sellers say it will soften with use about 6 weeks after purchase. Is this normal?

Hi Ann,

Thanks for your question.

It could be, that dependent on how the mattress has been stored, the fillings might have shifted. If this is the case it will take a couple of weeks of being slept in to settle properly back to it's original form. This usually happens if mattresses have been stored on their sides rather than flat.

Similarly, any new mattress will feel firmer to begin with as the fillings nor the spring unit will have been compressed. We do advise that any new mattress needs to be given at least 4-6 weeks for you to adjust to it.

This is the main reason that we ourselves provide our 60 day love it or return it guarantee; This is a no quibble policy meaning that if the item isn't right then it can either be returned for a full refund or exchanged under the one time exchange.

Spring tension is determined by body weight alone as this is what provides you with the support;

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

I hope this has answered your questions fully but if you do have any further queries please don't hesitate to contact our office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards, Lee.
