Softness

Hi
I'd much rather call for a proper discussion but it's difficult during the working day so firstly a general question.
If the support in a mattress is provided by a suitably specified spring tension with the upholstery providing the comfort layer, why wouldn't everybody go for the softest comfort layer available?
More specifically, we're considering the Artisan Luxury or Artisan Naturals.
I'm 5ft 10in and 10st, my wife is 5ft 4in and 9st and we'll be using a slatted bed. We seem to fall between a recommended spring tension of soft/medium so what would you recommend?
And in relation to my question above, clearly the Luxury is softer than the Naturals, is it just cost that would influence my choice for the less plush upholstery or am I missing something.
And would we need to adapt the bed in any way or are slats ok?
Many thanks

Hi Chris,

Thank you for your question.

Comfort layers are very subjective; what is comfortable for one person isn't comfortable for another person.
As such, this is why not everyone opts for the same mattress or comfort.

At the body weights provided you both fall under a Medium spring tension. The spring tension is what gives you the correct level of support within the mattress itself.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

Once you have established this you can then ignore this and concentrate on the comfort that you want.

Our Artisan range have a differing level of natural fibres and materials used in their construction and because of this they will always feel softer than our Origins range for example.

The Artisan Luxury is the softest mattress that we offer in that range whereas the Artisan Naturals is very much medium feeling in the top layers; i.e, not too soft and not too firm.

Because of this, they are also generally cooler mattresses and are ideal for anyone who is a hot sleeper.

A slatted base is fine for our Artisan range as long as the gaps between the slats are no bigger than 3".
We would just advise that you put an old blanket down over the base whilst the mattress is settling.

I hope this has answered your question fully but if you have any further queries, please don't hesitate to contact us on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards Gary
