Can I have two different types of bed firmness on a split link bed?

We have Super king mattress. My wife needs a firmer mattress but I don’t.

Can you advise on the best option please for people who prefer different mattress feels?

Hi Edward,

Thanks for getting in touch and that's a great question about split link (or split tension) mattresses.

The quick answer is yes, you can have a split link or split tension mattress. This is where each side has a different spring tension, ie one side may have a medium 1.4 gauge pocket spring the other a 1.6 firm gauge pocket spring. Spring tensions are based purely on the sleeper's bodyweight though and have very little bearing on the overall comfort feel of a mattress.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

If you're asking whether or not you can have two completely different 'comfort feels' in a split mattress ie a soft feel side and a firm feel side this is not as easy.

Most zip and link mattresses have to be the same model - it is just the spring tension that changes based on different body weights. This is because mixing two different mattresses with different upholstery can lead to different rates of mattress settlement, different mattress depths and other inconsistencies. That's why you won't find any reputable mattress manufacture splicing together two very different mattresses.

However, it is not all bad news. You could add a mattress topper to the side that you want to soften up slightly. Mattress topper are great at softening up the top comfort layers of a mattress. So you can in effect tweak your side if you prefer a softer feel in the top upholstery layers of the mattress when compared to your wife.

Just to summarise our advice for you Edward to assist:

  • Spring tensions can differ in a split link bed if you and your partner's body weight is in different tension brackets
  • Comfort preferences are best tweaked with a topper to take a firmer mattress to a softer feel
  • Two different mattresses shouldn't be manufactured as a one-piece as different fillings on either side will settle and behaved inconsistency when out together.
