I need a new mattress to go on a 5' metal bedframe with slatted base (from Next some years ago). It is mostly used by one person, 5'8'', 11.5-12.5 stone. Current mattress is soft. Person sleeps on back, uses goose feather/down pillow. Currently sleeping very poorly and waking with aches and pains. Also needs to be able to sit up and work in bed - writing and illustrating.

Hi Isabella,

Thanks for your question.

It sounds from your aches and pains that maybe your mattress is too soft for you and is, therefore, giving you aches and pains. This is probably because you're not supported enough during the night by the softer spring tension.

Without a budget, it is difficult to give you an exact recommendation but I've provided two at the end of the advice. Whatever mattress you choose we would advise you board over the slats to prevent undue settlement or lumps appearing in your mattress as we detail in this article.

With the exception of electric beds, normally mattresses and bases are not made for extended periods of sitting up in. It depends on how long you'll be doing this for, as sitting usually requires a firmer support surface than sleeping, thinking about sofa cushions in comparison to a mattress for example. Sofas use dense reflex foam or firmer fillings as a general rule of thumb as all the pressure is focused on backsides.

If this is the case, however, I would recommend that you go with a medium tension support unit for your weight, being a more supportive mattress than you have now, and use pillows to prop yourself up when sitting in bed. If you go for a firmer mattress that is more supportive when sitting up i.e, you don't need as many pillows, and therefore putting more focused stress on the mattress, it may be that your sleep suffers. So the recommendation bears this in mind.

Since you've mentioned natural fibres I'm assuming you would like a mattress that contains natural fibres.

Please have a look at our Artisan Naturals, which I would recommend in a medium tension. This also has a medium feel in the upholstery layers and is constructed with 85% natural fibres with Calico encased pocket springs.

If this is out of your budget then the Origins Pocket 1500 would be a suitable alternative which is medium or may be the Origins Pocket Latex 1500  if you really want a slightly firmer feel in the top layer. If you need more advice please give us a call on 0161 437 4419 and we can help direct you more closely to a suitable model.

Kind Regards, Lee.
