Super kingsize mattress for a sleigh bed frame with slatted base?
My wife is 1m 80cm, and approximately 70 kg and a side sleeper. I am 1m.78cm and 76kg and mainly a back sleeper as I have lower back, shoulder & neck pain. We would appreciate your recommendations. Access to and into the house is good so single mattress would be ok, and we can consider a zip and link if necessary. My wife sleeps quite hot so a foam mattress is probably not appropriate.
We were looking in Bensons for Beds and tried the SIMBA Hybrid Foam & Spring bed, and felt it was probably too firm. We then tried an iGel bed which was more comfortable but much higher priced. Finally we tried the pure opulence bespoke collection by Staples, and that was the preference from a comfort point of view if a 2 minute lay down can tell us anything. I found the number 2 tension more to my liking than the 3.
Hi Baz,
Great to hear from you. It sounds like you've been on a good skirmish of mattress hunting, I bet you feel a tad frazzled?!
Given your wife's overheating you're right that foams of all kinds should be avoided. They are the most heat retentive of all upholstery materials. So I'll avoid anything with foam for the recommendation.
Looking at the Staples Oppulence in Dreams it is a pillowtop mattress. We've written extensively about the nightmares that these can cause when the topper inevitably goes. Pillowtops are all one-sided and can't be turned. This means that the pillowtop softer layer is then adhered to the mattress. It can't be removed or replaced. At first, these feel really luxurious but after a while, they tend to flatten and compress as the softer fibres settle. As you can't turn the mattress once these compress the mattress often feels far different to the original feel. We don't sell any pillowtop mattresses. You're far better off with a separate topper if you need to soften that top layer.
Unfortunately, the model description gives no Grams per square meter on the upholstery contained. This means that the descriptions such as '100% British Wool' are meaningless. This could be a 50gsm layer (thinner than a tissue) or a 1000gsm layer (a lofty layer). Without knowing it is impossible to compare mattresses or work out if its a good value offering. Frustrating isn't it?
So as far as recommendations go it sounds like you're looking for a softer feel mattress in the upholstery layer given your preference of a 2 in Bensons. As for the spring tension, this is dictated by your bodyweight, so for both of your weights you' be looking for a medium tension spring. Our handy spring tension guide can be seen below.
Spring Tension | Wire diameter (Gauge) | Weight Range |
---|---|---|
Soft | 1.2mm | Bespoke Tension (Please Call) |
Medium | 1.4mm | Upto 16 stone |
Firm | 1.6mm | 16 stone plus |
Extra Firm / Orthopaedic | 1.9mm | 20 stone plus |
The two models we would recommend are:
Origins Comfort: This has a soft feel in the upholstery layer and is our entry-level models. Great value for money, two-sided and contains 1000 pocket springs along with 1250GSM of fillings.
If you're wanting a natural fibre high-end mattress then the next soft model is the Artisan Luxury. This is a 100% natural fibre vanadium coated pocket spring model. It has a very soft top layer due to the Fleece Cotton and Wool & horsetail. Pure luxury natural fibres. It contains a whopping 4600GSM of breathable natural fibres.
As for the slatted base we always recommend that you board over the slats to prevent sagging or dipping. You can do this relatively easily and cheaply with some peg board or MDF. There's a handy guide here for you.
