Switch from IKEA to John Ryan

Comment Check Icon 1 answers Comment Icon 0 comments

Greetings,

Me and my partner have used a few IKEA mattress in the past, and we prefer the ones with pocket spring and firm firmness (my partner is not a huge fan of IKEA medium firmness). I am 12.5 stone and she is 9.5 stone. She sleeps mostly on her back, whilst I am a back and side sleeper. I understand that John Ryan separates firmness from the spring tension, whilst IKEA tend not to(?).

Given the information above, what firmness and spring tension would you recommend on a John Ryan mattress?

Kind regards,

Hi,

Thank you for your question. A lot of retailers will describe a mattress's comfort based on the spring tension and not on the upholstery layers on top of the springs. These comfort layers determine how the mattress feels and not the spring tension.

Bodyweight Spring tension
Upto 16 Stone / 50-101kg Medium (1.4mm)
16 Stone / 101kg Upwards Firm (1.6mm)
Available in Bespoke Products (Please Call) Soft (1.2mm)

Your height and weight should determine spring tension to give the correct level of support. We would pair you both with the medium spring tension at your body weights. Neither of you weights enough to activate the firm spring tension which means you will not get any support from the springs.

Given your preference for a firmer mattress, I would recommend a firmer medium level of comfort such as the Origins Reflex 1000 or the Artisan 1500 which will still have a little cushioning in the top layer for your shoulders and hips to sink into when sleeping on your side but has a more supportive feel so that you do not sink in too much when sleeping on your back.  This will feel firmer for your partner, at her very light body weight she will not make much impression into the upholstery layers. The Origins Reflex 1000 is a manmade fibre mattress and the Artisan 1500 is constructed with 53% natural fibres which helps to regulate your body temperature and provide a cooler sleeper surface. As natural fibres are more durable than manmade fibres the lifespan of the mattress will be longer.

I hope this helps and if you would like any further information please do not hesitate to contact the office on 0161 437 4419.

Kind Regards

Michaela
