The slats in my 15 year old bed are sinking in the middle.

Can I just replace the slats, and if so do you sell them? (they are not screwed in, just slot into the sides and middle where there is a central column of wood going down vertically. The slats are 6cm wide, with a gap of 5cm between them. 16 slats I think – if they don’t come apart in the middle, which I’m not sure about – if so, 32 slats, 16 each side of the bed). Or can I just turn the slats over - or will them break?
Otherwise, I have been advised to buy a piece of plywood (not sure which thickness) to put either over the top of the slats or instead of. Size needed 2005mm x 1525mm but with holes drilled in so air can get through - I have a latex mattress. But this doesn't seem an easy option if you don't know a good DIY person to help. Not sure if you can help with this, or any other ideas. Many thanks for your advice. Sarah

Hi Sarah,

Thanks for getting in touch. Sounds like a bit of a pickle your in with the bed base.

We don't sell slatted bases or the slats as the issue you get with heavy high-end mattresses like our is that slats struggle to support mattresses over time. You could try and replace the slats or fix them somehow. Without photos it's hard to advise we're afraid! If you can send some in it may help.

Mattress bases need to adequately support the weight of the sleeper and the mattress. If not then a damaged or unsupportive base can damage a mattress beyond repair. I'd be mindful when trying to fix it that it's done correctly so it doesn't cause you or the mattress any misdeeds! You haven't said if it's one of our Fusion Latex models, if so you can see the weights here that the base will have to accommodate which may help when looking to replace or fix the base.

Alternatively, you might want to consider completely boarding the base with MDF, plywood or pegboard. This will give a uniform platform top surface. Our Latex or Hybrid Foam ranges need to go on to a solid top base otherwise the materials will attempt to settle in the gaps of the slats.

It maybe more cost and time effective to buy a new base Sarah, like a Contemporary Platform Top Divan. If you need more help please give us a call on 0161 437 4419. Our office is open Monday to Friday 8am to 8pm and Saturday and Sunday 10am to 4pm.

Kind Regards, Lee.
